Seaspeak rolls to victory in Dallas Turf Cup

Dr. John A. Chandler's homebred SEASPEAK (Mizzen Mast) was hammered into 1-5 favoritism for Monday's $200,000 Dallas Turf Cup H. (G3) at Lone Star Park, and the Ralph Nicks trainee fully justified that measure of confidence with a 4 3/4-length victory.

Shrewdly handled by Julien Leparoux, the dark bay prompted the slow pace set by Tricky Causeway (Giant's Causeway) through splits of :25 1/5 and :50 2/5. Seaspeak surged to the front before completing six furlongs in 1:14, shrugged off a bid by Ernesto (Royal Academy) turning for home, and opened up through the stretch to stop the teletimer in 1:48 1/5 for the firm-turf 1 1/8 miles. The fans' choice returned $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10 while starting the $10.20 exacta and $29 trifecta (4-3-2).

The 8-1 Ernesto stayed on valiantly to finish a clear second by 2 3/4 lengths, paying $4.20 and $2.80. Red Rock Creek (Numerous) checked in third for the second consecutive year and rewarded his backers with $2.40 at 6-1. Overbid (Pulpit), Precious Colony (Wild Colony) and Tricky Causeway rounded out the order under the wire. Song of Navarone (Sultry Song) was scratched in favor of the Lone Star Park H. (G3) later on the card.

Seaspeak's first stakes score boosted his bankroll to $243,828 from an 8-3-2-2 line. Third in the Grand Canyon H. as a juvenile, he denied Cowboy Cal (Giant's Causeway) by a head after a rousing stretch duel in the Bryan Station S. (G3) last fall, only to be disqualified and placed second. Seaspeak concluded his 2008 campaign with a close second in the Commonwealth Turf S. (G3), and he opened 2009 with an impressive allowance score at Keeneland.

The Kentucky-bred was produced by the winning Gone West mare Somerset West, who is herself a half-sister to a number of turf stakes performers, including multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Cetewayo (His Majesty), last year's Flower Bowl Invitational (G1) heroine Dynaforce (Dynaformer), Canadian Grade 2 victor Bowman Mill (Kris S.), and Thabazimbi (Empire Maker), third in Saturday's Louisville H. (G3). Seaspeak, who RNA'd for $19,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, has an unnamed juvenile half-sister by Langfuhr, an unnamed yearling half-sister by Maria's Mon and a 2009 full sister.
