Lookin at Lucky, Sidney's Candy draw extreme
posts in Derby

Lookin at Lucky has been made the early favorite for Derby 136
(Rickelle Nelson/Horsephotos.com) |
Champion two-year-old colt LOOKIN AT LUCKY (Smart Strike) is the
3-1 morning-line favorite in Saturday's 136th running of the $2
million Kentucky Derby (G1), but the multiple Grade 1-winning colt
didn't receive a favorable post draw in gate 1. Santa Anita Derby
(G1) hero SIDNEY'S CANDY (Candy Ride [Arg]), the 5-1 second choice
on Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia's morning line, must
also overcome an undesirable starting position in post 20.
Lookin at Lucky, winner of the Rebel S. (G2) in his 2010 debut
and a troubled third in the Santa Anita Derby in his final prep
race, is one of two starters for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert,
who will be looking for his fourth Kentucky Derby victory. The
trainer will also saddle CONVEYANCE (Indian Charlie), who is
expected to contest the pace from post 12.
Top jockey Garrett Gomez, who is looking for his first Derby win,
will retain the mount on Lookin at Lucky. The bay colt brings a
stellar 8-6-1-1 career mark and more than $1.5 million in earnings
into Saturday's 1 1/4-mile test.
|
Sidney's Candy, who established himself as a serious Derby threat
with convincing wire-to-wire victories in both the Santa Anita Derby
and San Felipe S. (G2) for John Sadler, is expected to revert to
stalking tactics in the Derby but will likely use his natural speed
in an effort to save ground from the outermost post. Regular rider
Joe Talamo will be in the saddle.

(Debra Kral/Horsephotos.com) |
Lookin at Lucky and Sidney's Candy are the only horses at
single-digit odds on the Kentucky Derby morning line. Three horses
are rated as 10-1 co-third choices -- Florida Derby (G1) scorer ICE
BOX (Pulpit), Gotham S. (G3) victor AWESOME ACT (Awesome Again) and
the filly DEVIL MAY CARE (Malibu Moon).
Ice Box, conditioned by two-time Derby winner and Hall of Famer
Nick Zito, received a tough draw in post 2. He'll have the services
of jockey Jose Lezcano. Awesome Act, who lost a shoe at the start of
a third-place effort in the Wood Memorial S. (G1) last out, hails
from the Newmarket, England, stable of Jeremy Noseda and will have a
top local rider Julien Leparoux at the helm. He'll break from post
16.
Devil May Care, who exits an impressive tally in the Bonnie Miss
S. (G2) and also captured the Frizette S. (G1) at two, is the
highest-rated of four entrants from Todd Pletcher, who is looking to
end a zero-for-24 streak in the first leg of the Triple Crown.
Well-drawn in post 11, she'll add blinkers and keep John Velazquez
up in her first start against males.
Grade 1 winners DUBLIN (Afleet Alex) and NOBLE'S PROMISE (Cuvee),
as well as multiple Grade 3 victor Conveyance, come next on the
morning line at 12-1. Dublin represents Hall of Fame trainer D.
Wayne Lukas, who will be seeking his fifth Kentucky Derby victory.
SUPER SAVER (Maria's Mon), a smashing five-length winner of the
Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2) at Churchill for Pletcher, is one of
two 15-1 shots along with JACKSON BEND (Hear No Evil), who exits
runner-up finishes in the Wood Memorial and Fountain of Youth S.
(G2) for Zito.
|
Louisiana Derby (G2) winner MISSION IMPAZIBLE (Unbridled's Song)
and Blue Grass S. (G1) runner-up PADDY O'PRADO (El Prado [Ire]) were
both installed at 20-1 on the morning line.
STATELY VICTOR (Ghostzapper) and LINE OF DAVID (Lion Heart), who
registered major upsets in the Blue Grass and Arkansas Derby (G1),
are listed at 30-1 along with Illinois Derby (G3) scorer AMERICAN
LION (Tiznow) and Risen Star S. (G2) winner DISCREETLY MINE
(Mineshaft).
Four horses round out the field at 50-1 -- BACKTALK (Smarty
Jones), DEAN'S KITTEN (Kitten's Joy), HOMEBOYKRIS (Roman Ruler) and
MAKE MUSIC FOR ME (Bernstein).
