Smiling Tiger seeks second straight win in Bing Crosby

Millionaire SMILING TIGER (Hold That Tiger) posted his first Grade 1 victory in last year's Bing Crosby (G1) at Del Mar, winning wire to wire by a 1 1/2-length margin, and the classy four-year-old will be back to defend his title in Sunday's $250,000 race. The Jeff Bonde-trained colt will meet six rivals in the six-furlong event including EUROEARS (Langfuhr), who will make his first start since an excellent second in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1) in late March.

A three-time Grade 1 hero, Smiling Tiger will enter the Bing Crosby off an impressive three-length score in the July 2 Triple Bend (G1) at Hollywood Park in which he equaled a career-best 107 BRIS Speed rating. The speedy colt rebounded last time from the only unplaced finish in his 16-race career, a sixth in the Churchill Downs S. (G2), and the versatile sprinter has also posted nice wins in the San Carlos H. (G2) and Count Fleet H. (G3) this season.

Smiling Tiger will carry the top weight of 123 pounds, including jockey Joel Rosario, and breaks from the rail.

Euroears was transferred to Bob Baffert this season and came back from a six-month layoff with a 2 1/4-length victory in the Palos Verdes S. (G2) in late January, turning six furlongs in a eye-catching 1:07 1/5. The chestnut seven-year-old followed with an outstanding performance in Dubai, finishing second to international superstar Rocket Man (Viscount), and appears to be training forwardly in preparation for his return from a 127-day layoff, drilling six furlongs in a bullet 1:11 2/5 from the gate over the Polytrack recently. Rafael Bejarano will pick up the mount on the front runner.

Grade 2 winner AMAZOMBIE (Northern Afleet) reeled off three straight victories before finishing third as the favorite in the Triple Bend. The stalker has the right running style in the speed-laden field, and jockey Mike Smith, who had ridden Euroears in his last two starts, will stick with the five-year-old gelding on Sunday. Amazombie will be making his first start at Del Mar for trainer Bill Spawr.

KINSALE KING (Yankee Victor), the 2010 Golden Shaheen winner, will need a career best to factor off a 164-day hiatus. He shipped to Dubai to defend his title in March but was withdrawn beforehand due to a last-minute setback, and the Carl O'Callahan-conditioned gelding will be making his first appearance under silks since an allowance victory at Golden Gate Fields in mid-February. The six-year-old will receive a new rider in Martin Pedroza.

Outsiders COFFEE BOY (Yonaguska), CARBONITE (Aldebaran) and COLOR OF COURAGE (Came Home) round out the line-up.
