Review sparkles again in Mrs. Revere

Sparkling Review could wheel back for the Hollywood Derby or Matriarch (Churchill Downs/Reed Palmer Photography)
Edward Seltzer and Beverly Anderson's Sparkling Review mowed down pacesetter Kiss Moon in deep stretch of Saturday's Grade 2, $237,800 Mrs. Revere Stakes at Churchill Downs, extending her record to four-for-four on the turf. Reminiscent of her rallying victory in the October 17 Valley View at Keeneland, the Ben Colebrook trainee kicked 2 3/4 lengths clear as she completed 1 1/16 firm-turf miles in 1:42 1/5.

Sparkling Review, sent off as the 4-1 third choice, gave jockey Julien Leparoux a sweep of Saturday's stakes. Two races earlier in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Turf, Leparoux steered Heart to Heart to a front-running triumph. Sparkling Review employed markedly different tactics, nestled in midpack while Kiss Moon dictated splits of :23 3/5, :47 3/5 and 1:12. Kiss Moon tried to open up a decisive advantage at the top of the lane, only to be overwhelmed by the winner.

"She's got such an unbelievable turn of foot," Colebrook said. "It's pretty crazy when you think about the fact that she was just a maiden in August."

"She's a very nice filly," Leparoux said. "She always has given me a very nice kick at the end and she's done everything very easily in her last two wins now. I didn't even have to whip her today; I just asked her a little bit and felt like she had plenty left in the tank. I don't know where she'll go next but I am definitely excited about riding her again."

Lady Lara encountered trouble in her rally, but still flashed home to deny Kiss Moon the runner-up spot by a neck. Personal Diary was a close fourth in a blanket finish for the minors. Testa Rossi, the 2-1 favorite, wound up seventh in the 14-filly field.

Sparkling Review, who paid $10.60, boosted her bankroll to $303,642 from her 5-4-0-0 line. Unraced at two, she made her debut June 20 in a 6 1/2-furlong sprint at a muddy Churchill Downs, finishing in a dead-heat for fifth. She then switched to turf and hasn't looked back, breaking her maiden at Arlington and adding a Kentucky Downs allowance before her stakes premiere in the Valley View.

"I nominated her to the Matriarch and to the Hollywood Derby, because we said going in that if she won impressively that we would talk about it," Colebrook said, "and now that she has, we'll definitely talk about it. But I'm not sure what we'll do from here to be honest."

Bred by Seltzer in Kentucky, the Lemon Drop Kid filly is the first registered foal from the multiple stakes-placed Pleasant Tap mare Pleasant Review.
