Ryan secures Redoute's Choice session topper at Magic Millions More than one heart was broken when Coolmore swooped in to buy Thursday's A$960,000 session topper, a colt by Fastnet Rock, at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, and among them was trainer Gerald Ryan. Not ready to be denied again, the Sydney-based trainer tenaciously outlasted his competition to secure Lot No. 532, a son of Redoute's Choice, for A$750,000 during Friday's third session. "It was a different story and (he was) so much better," said Ryan, commenting on his ability to succeed where he had failed one day earlier. "I'd given up, because I couldn't get it together the past two days, but it wasn't until he was around in the back (walking ring), I said "No, I couldn't let this horse go.'" Consigned by Reavill Farm, the colt is out of listed winner Cloister (Marauding), a daughter of Group 3 heroine Pampas Fire (Prince True). The October 13 foal is from the family of Australian highweight and multiple Group 1 king Zeditave. "I really liked the horse, and he is one of the best colts in the whole sale," Ryan said. "He's athletic and he has a sensational pedigree. Mr. (John) Messara (of Arrowfield Stud) recommended him, and he reckoned the colt probably moves as well as any of the Redoute's Choice colts we've seen." Giving Ryan special interest in the colt was the fact that the former jockey trained the yearling's full sister Melito, who headed the three-year-old classification in Australia for the 2009-10 season. Winner of five group events, including the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes, Group 1 Winter Stakes and Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes, the filly retired with earnings of A$1,937,350. "He looks like his sire, but he is very much like his sister," Ryan remarked. "But he looks like he'll run earlier than his sister." When asked if Ryan was reminded of the colt's sister when he looked at him in the back ring, Ryan quipped, "No, he just reminded me of a good horse." Trainer Gai Waterhouse and bloodstock agent James Harron made a fast start at the Gold Coast Yearling sale earlier this week, and the duo was still firing Friday when collecting 17 head, led by the session's second top seller. A member of the Newgate Farm consigment, Lot 457, a colt by More Than Ready out of Aqua d'Amore (Danehill), realized a A$680,000 final bid from the new pairing. "He was one of our top picks of the sale," Harron said. "He is by a champion stallion and a champion two-year-old sire, and this is one of the best crosses in Australia with Danehill. "He has been a star from the start. He is a really good-moving colt that is very strong in his action and he looks like he'll be early. He is just ideal for the sort of horses we are trying to target." The September 20 foal is the second offspring by Aqua d'Amore, winner of the Group 1 Futurity Stakes and an earner of nearly A$2-milllion. Campaigned by Coolmore Stud, Aqua d'Amore was trained by Waterhouse throughout her racing career. "She was as fantastic racemare for Gai and the cross really works," Harron said. "I worked for Gai when she trained this mare, so I'm familiar with her. There definitely are some similarities between her and this colt, especially streaming from the Danehill side."
