David Howe and William Parsons Jr.'s homebred Merry Meadow (Henny Hughes)
kept pace with leader Flutterby (Congrats) throughout Sunday's $250,000
Princess Rooney S. (G2), gained a slim head advantage in the stretch and
inched away to win by 1 3/4 lengths with Javier Castellano aboard.
Flutterby set a quick pace of :22 and :44 1/5 but could never shake loose
from her 7-5 favored rival. The two hit the lane together, with Merry Meadow
subduing her game opponent to finish up the six-furlong contest in 1:09 1/5 over
Gulfstream Park's fast main track. She paid $4.40 to her backers for the win.
Kiss to Remember (Big Brown) was another 2 1/2 lengths behind Flutterby in
third, while Sweet Basil (Pulpit) filled out the superfecta in fourth.
Merry Meadow broke her maiden in 2013 in her 11th start and later that season
placed in two overnight stakes in New York. Last year, the bay mare recorded
wins in the Vagrancy H. (G3), Sugar Swirl (G3) and Sky Beauty S. while placing
in the Bed o' Roses H. (G3) and Honorable Miss H. (G2). |
The Mark Hennig trainee opened her five-year-old campaign with a dominating 9
1/2-length win in the Hurricane Bertie S. (G3) but was a subpar sixth in the
Inside Information S. (G2) last out on March 21.
This fourth graded victory pushed her career earnings to $842,800 and
improved her line to read 28-9-10-5.
Bred in Kentucky, Merry Meadow is the first registered stakes winner out of
Merryland Monroe (Allen's Prospect), who is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1
victor Diazo (Jade Hunter). Her family also includes Grade 3 scorer Real Dandy
(Yankee Victor) and multiple Grade 3-placed stakes winner Premeditation
(Afternoon Deelites).
