When the optional USB Supplement is installed within Windows 95(OSR2, OSR2.1, or OSR2.5), users may encounter fatal errors when they attempt to print reports from Capsheet. There are no reports of this problem for Win95 when the USB Supplement has not been installed. There are no reports of this problem for Win98 or NT machines.

Problem Analysis

A reproducable bug is introduced when the USB Supplement is installed in Win95. The symptoms of this bug are that small files may be copied to local printers, but copying large files to local printers will cause the Spooler Subsystem to crash.

Here is how to determine if you are affected by this bug:

  1. Verify that the USB Supplement is installed by looking in the Control Panel applet Add/Remove Programs or by finding file NTKERN.VXD in C:\Windows\System\VMM32.
  2. From an MS-DOS prompt, verify that small files print when USB is installed:
    COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT LPT1 /B
  3. From an MS-DOS prompt, verify than larger files crash the system:
    COPY C:\WINDOWS\FAQ.TXT LPT1 /B
  4. Follow the Error Dialog instruction to reboot if the system does crash.

Win95 Problem Fix

  1. Uninstall the USB Supplement via the Control Panel applet Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Restart Win95.
  3. Print a handicapping report from Capsheet.

Other Considerations

  1. PCs purchased after the introduction of Win95 OSR2.1 often find that the USB Supplement was factory installed even though their systems include no USB peripherals. Thus, when no USB peripherals are installed, removal of the USB Supplement will have no impact on system functionality.
  2. If you do have USB peripherals, Microsoft recommends upgrading to Win98 or NT. At this time, Microsoft has no plans to fix this bug.
  3. On rare occasions, a failure may occur when uninstalling the Win95 USB Supplement. If such a failure occurs, recovery procedures are documented in MS Knowledge Base article Q167889.
