Johnston earns ninth, Buick secures first Glorious Goodwood
title

Mark Johnston was top trainer at
Glorious Goodwood for a
ninth time after sending out four winners, three winners and eight thirds at the
five-day extravaganza.

The North Yorkshire handler got off the mark with
Sennockian Star in the opening race of the meeting, Lyn
Valley led home a one-two for the stable in the Fairmont Handicap on Thursday
and a last day double, courtesy of Double Bluff and Grigolo, sealed the title.

“It’s great to win the leading trainer
award,” Johnston said. “It has been a really good week and the horses have been running really
well. We seem to have been in the places at least twice as much as over there
(winner’s circle). Joe (Fanning) has had seven thirds and I don’t know how many
of them were ours!

“It is hard to say what the highlight has been. Sennockian
Star, Lyn Valley and Double Bluff all won similar races really, so it would be
hard to pick a highlight.

“Glorious Goodwood is not like Royal Ascot when you start
planning months in advance,” he added. “You still think about Goodwood but probably only
four or six weeks beforehand. Once you get Royal Ascot out the way, you can
start looking towards Goodwood.”

William Buick annexed the Racing UK Top Jockey Award for
the first time after partnering five winners, including four for his boss John
Gosden. The award was not decided until the last race of the five-day meeting,
with Richard Hughes and Joe Fanning close behind on four successes each.

Buick’s biggest win of the week came aboard Normandie
Stud-owned Sultanina in Saturday’s Nassau Stakes. He also
guided Wannabe Yours, running in the same colors, to victory in Friday’s Thoroughbred Stakes.

“It has been a great week,” Buick remarked. “It is always
nice to do well at these big meetings and the highlight was winning the Nassau
Stakes on Sultanina.”

Buick has donated £1,000 to Racing Welfare through Dave
Yates’ Lands End to John O’Groats bike ride.
