Beholder tries males, installed as 5-2 Pacific Classic

favorite

Beholder (Henny Hughes), an impressive seven-length winner of the Clement L.

Hirsch (G1) on August 1, will make first attempt against males in Saturday's $1

million

Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar. The Richard Mandella-trained dual champion

will meet nine rivals and stretch out to 1 1/4 miles with regular rider Gary

Stevens. The outstanding five-year-old mare was made the 5-2 morning line

favorite.

Her main rivals include stablemate Catch a Flight (Giant's Causeway), who

recorded his third graded win in the last four starts when taking the July 25

San Diego (G2) earlier in the meet. The five-year-old loses Stevens and picks up

Flavien Prat. Bob Baffert has a pair of Grade 1 winners, Bayern (Offlee Wild)

and Hoppertunity (Any Given Saturday), and both are attempting to snap losing

streaks. Bayern has lost all three outings since leading wire to wire in the

Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) and Hoppertunity has dropped four straight.

Hard Aces (Hard Spun), who recorded his first graded tally with a 7-1 upset

in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1), is also entered and Red Vine (Candy Ride)

invades from the East Coast off a runner-up in the Salvator Mile (G3).

Beholder has drawn post 9 and James Scully explains why he believes the

outside post is an advantage in a TwinSpires blog post.
