Brody’s Cause flies home in Breeders’ Futurity upset
Albaugh Family Stable’s Brody’s Cause (Giant’s Causeway) was sent off at 11-1 in Saturday’s $500,000 Breeders’ Futurity S. (G1) on Keeneland’s Fall Stars Saturday program but ran like a favorite when coming with a furious rally to overtake 2-1 favorite Exaggerator (Curlin) and score by a length. Trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Corey Lanerie, the bay colt finished the 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Futurity in 1:43.27 to earn a spot in the starting gate for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on October 31 at the Lexington, Kentucky, venue.
Earlier on the card, Two Hearts Farm LLC and Don Janes’ Fioretti (Bernardini) provided an upset of her own at 17-1 in the $250,000
Thoroughbred Club of America S. (G2) under jockey Sophie Doyle. The Tony
Hamilton-trained five-year-old claimed a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) when finishing the six-furlong TCA in 1:10.04.
Silver Trail Stables LLC’s Amelia’s Wild Ride (D’wildcat) kicked off the stakes
action with a 2 1/2-length score in the $150,000 Woodford S. Originally
scheduled for 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf, the race lost its Grade 3 status when
transferred to the muddy main track and run at the same distance in a time of 1:02.97. Amelia’s Wild Ride wired the Woodford by 2 1/2 lengths with Jose Lezcano aboard for trainer Ramon Preciado.
The two Grade 1s scheduled for the turf stayed on the grass. Grand Arch (Arch) locked up a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) by just
lasting from The Pizza Man (English Channel) in the $1 million
Shadwell Turf Mile (G1), while Tepin (Bernstein) is also Mile-bound after blasting her rivals in the $400,000 First Lady (G1).
