A great supporter of the industry for decades, George Strawbridge Jr. has received the Eclipse Award for leading breeder. He bred Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar.
Bricks and Mortar went 6-for-6, including major wins in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) and Arlington Million (G1), and earned more than $6.7 million in 2019.
Strawbridge ranked third overall among North American breeders with earnings of $7,505,233, winning 26 races from 110 starts. Eclipse voters opted for quality over quantity, with runner-up Calumet Farm leading all breeders with $12,545,854 in earnings.
Strawbridge, who campaigns horses under Augustin Stable, has enjoyed international success with both steeplechase and flat racing. He has campaigned multiple champions in America and Europe, and been a member of The Jockey Club since 1976.
His grandfather, Dr. John Dorrance, founded the Campbell Soup Company and Strawbridge serves on the company’s board of directors.
