Mutuel field, Verrazano favored in KDFW Pool 2; Flashy Gray 6-1 choice in KOFW The second Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) pool and the only Kentucky Oaks Future Wager (KOFW) of 2013 closed within 30 minutes of each other on Sunday, but with vastly different results. Just like Pool 1, the mutuel field (#24), or All Others, was once again bet down to favoritism at the close of the KDFW Pool 2. The wagering interest, which includes all three-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual betting interests, was the strong 3-1 pick after dipping down to 8-5 on Day 1 of wagering. Unbeaten Verrazano (#22) became the favored individual at 9-1 by the time the pool ended on Sunday. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the More Than Ready colt dominated an optional claiming field on February 2 at Gulfstream Park by 16 1/4 lengths and is scheduled to make his stakes bow in Saturday's Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby. Fellow undefeated sophomore Vyjack (#23) saw his odds dip on Saturday following an impressive victory in the Grade 3 Gotham at Aqueduct. The Into Mischief gelding progressed from his morning-line odds of 30-1 to 23-1 on Day 1 of the KDFW. By day's end on Saturday, however, the Rudy Rodriguez trainee's odds had fallen even more to 14-1, and he closed out Sunday at 11-1 to become the second favorite among the individual betting interests. Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis winner Flashback (#6) and Grade 2 Fountain of Youth hero Orb (#11) were both listed at 12-1 when Pool 2 ended, while Grade 3 Holy Bull scorer Itsmyluckyday (#8) closed at 13-1. Kentucky Derby fans wagered $407,038 during Pool 2, with $287,611 going to win wagers and $119,427 in exacta wagering. In Churchill Downs' 2013 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, Flashy Gray (#9) became the people's choice to win the Grade 1 contest despite never having competed around two turns or in a stakes race. The daughter of Flashy Bull, a winner of two of three career starts for Churchill Downs' all-time leading trainer Bill Mott, was the surprising 5-1 betting choice among 24 wagering interests following the first of the three days. Unbeaten Unlimited Budget (#23) caught her on Day 2 to become favored at 7-1, but Flashy Gray rebounded on Sunday to close out the only KOFW of 2013 as the 6-1 pick. Flashy Gray was followed on the odds board by the mutuel field (#24), which features all three-year-old fillies other than the 23 individual horses on the KOFW betting roster. The All Others bet stood at 7-1 when wagering concluded Saturday evening. Reigning two-year-old filly champion Beholder (#1), a romping 3 3/4-length winner of Saturday's Grade 1 Las Virgenes at Santa Anita, and Unlimited Budget, the Pletcher-trained victress of the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra at Fair Grounds on February 23, were the only other betting interests to close at single-digit odds. Beholder nudged out Unlimited Budget to close as the 8-1 third choice to her rival's 9-1 status. The $1 million Kentucky Oaks saw a total of $126,039 wagered during the three days of the pool, comprised of $87,633 in win wagers and $38,405 in exacta betting. The KDFW and KOFW offer fans an opportunity to bet on potential contenders for the Kentucky Derby and Oaks well in advance of the event at odds that could be significantly more attractive than those available on the day of the race. The $2 million Derby will be run for the 139th consecutive year at Churchill Downs on May 4, while the Oaks will take place the day before. Each pool offers $2 minimum win betting and exacta wagering, with the latter available in the form of $2 minimum straight exacta bets or $1-minimum exacta boxes and part-wheels. No scratches or betting refunds are permitted in the future wagers, but betting on an individual horse will be suspended immediately if Churchill Downs determines that an injury, illness or other circumstance revealed during the pool would prevent that horse from competing in his/her race.
