Revolutionary tops Louisiana Derby probables

Grade 3 Withers hero Revolutionary is one of 13 Kentucky Derby hopefuls projected to line up in the Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby on March 30, Fair Grounds announced Friday.

Revolutionary will likely be joined by his stablemate from the Todd Pletcher barn, Palace Malice, who was a close third in the Grade 2 Risen Star at Fair Grounds on February 23. Javier Castellano will be back aboard Revolutionary, and Palace Malice picks up Edgar Prado.

Palace Malice is expected to renew rivalry with the Bob Baffert-trained Code West, the near-miss runner-up from the Risen Star. Martin Garcia retains the mount on Code West. Other Risen Star alumni looking to improve in the Louisiana Derby are Golden Soul (sixth), Mylute (seventh) and Proud Strike (eighth).

Golden Soul, previously a distant second in the Grade 3 Lecomte, gets a rider switch to Calvin Borel. Proud Strike, who was ridden by Gary Stevens in the Risen Star, is still awaiting his jockey for the Louisiana Derby.

The Al Stall Jr. pair of Departing and Sunbean, both scratched from the Risen Star, are on course for the Louisiana Derby. Departing just extended his record to three-for-three in the Texas Heritage at Sam Houston, while Sunbean crushed Louisiana-breds in the off-the-turf Gentilly Stakes.

Two California shippers are in the mix -- Tiz a Minister, most recently third to Hear the Ghost and Flashback in the Grade 2 San Felipe, and Nina's Dragon, runner-up in the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby at his Golden Gate Fields base.

Other new shooters set for the 100th edition of the Fair Grounds showpiece are last-out allowance winner Ground Transport and recent maiden winner Hip Four Sixtynine.

Channel Isle was another originally deemed "probable," but trainer D. Wayne Lukas told Daily Racing Form Friday that he is bound for the Grade 3 Spiral at Turfway March 23 instead.

Louisiana Derby nominations close Saturday. Entries will be drawn March 27 at 11:30 a.m. (CDT) in the Fair Grounds paddock.
