Henny Hughes breezes at Belmont Last year's Saratoga Special S. (G2) hero HENNY HUGHES (Hennessy) recorded his first North American workout since his runner-up effort in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), stretching his legs in :37 for three furlongs over Belmont Park's fast track on Monday. His move for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin was tied for the third fastest of 16 at the distance. Privately purchased by the Maktoums last year, the chestnut sophomore has had an eventful winter. After being switched to McLaughlin for the Breeders' Cup, Henny Hughes was then shipped to Dubai, where he was transferred to the Millennium Stables of Sheikh Rashid. His preparation was reportedly compromised by his stable's rapid sequence of trainer changes, and although he eventually came under the care of South African native Alec Laird, he wound up skipping possible engagements at Nad al Sheba because Laird felt the colt was not ready to race. Henny Hughes was then shipped back to New York in late March and returned to McLaughlin's barn. Henny Hughes boasts a career mark of 6-3-3-0 with $644,820 in earnings. Trained by Patrick Biancone for nearly all of his juvenile season, he also scored in the Tremont S. and was twice second to First Samurai (Giant's Causeway) in the Hopeful S. (G1) and Champagne S. (G1).
