Deputy Glitters wins thrilling Ohio Derby Joseph Lacombe Stable Inc.'s homebred DEPUTY GLITTERS (Deputy Commander) moved to the front at the head of the stretch and outgamed a stubborn High Cotton (Dixie Union) to the wire in taking the $350,000 Ohio Derby (G2) at Thistledown on Saturday. The talented sophomore colt was kept in the three-path early under a confident Rene Douglas, as the locally based Tri Uimet (Lac Ouimet) led the field for the opening six furlongs in 1:12. High Cotton ranged up on the outside of the pacesetter to take a brief lead but was soon headed by Deputy Glitters, who saved his best running for the end. The winner completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50 1/5 on the fast dirt and rewarded his backers with mutuels of $10.20, $5.20 and $3.20 at 4-1. High Cotton had to settle for the place spot a neck back, paying $3 and $2.40 as the even-money choice. Flashy Bull (Holy Bull) encountered traffic problems late and could do no better than the third spot, good for $3.20 at 3-1 while 1 1/2 lengths shy of second. Sacred Light (Holy Bull) was next another five lengths in arrears and was trailed by Sayhellotolarry (Victory Gallop) and Tri Uimet. Deputy Glitters rebounded from a trio of unplaced Grade 1 efforts to garner his second graded win here, having captured the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) earlier in the year. The bay now sports a mark of 10-3-1-0 with earnings of $415,548. The winner was bred in the Bluegrass State and produced from the multiple stakes-placed Glitters (Glitterman). Deputy Glitters also has an unraced two-year-old half-sister named Glitter Dancer (Langfuhr), as well as an unnamed 2006 half-sister by Harlan's Holiday.
