Roxy is the Futurity King

Team Valor Stables' KING OF THE ROXY (Littleexpectations) swept four wide to the lead turning for home and held a game C P West (Came Home) at bay through the stretch in taking the $250,000 Futurity S. (G2) at Belmont on Saturday. Trained by Todd Pletcher and piloted by John Velazquez, the two-year-old broke smartly and was always prominent while wide, taking over in the final quarter-mile to earn his first black-type score. The final time for the fast seven furlongs was 1:24, and the 6-5 winner paid out $4.60, $2.90 and $2.50.

"He just kind of waits (on his competition)," Velazquez said. "He got to the front, and he started waiting. Even on the gallop out, he went the same way. I think he can be better if he puts it all together."

C P West rated in last early after the opening quarter-mile and put in a solid late run to impress in his second start, falling three-quarters of a length shy of the top prize. The 7-2 third choice rewarded backers with mutuels of $3.90 and $2.80 while completing the $18.40 exacta. Early pacesetter Kong's Revenge (Dixie Union) re-rallied after being passed in the stretch to garner show honors, worth $3.70 at 10-1. The trifecta paid $73.50. Incriminate (Unbridled's Song), the 9-5 second choice, was next and trailed by Sam P. (Cat Thief) and Fernando Po (Johannesburg), while Buffalo Man (El Prado [Ire]) was withdrawn.

King of the Roxy improved off his second-place effort in the Saratoga Special Breeders' Cup S. (G2), moving his lifetime mark to 4-2-1-0 with earnings of $226,400. The freshman colt was bred in Ohio by Deborah D. Kopatz and fetched a bid of $8,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, prior to being acquired privately by his current owners.

Produced from the winning Bold Forbes mare Marrakesh, the winner counts an unraced yearling filly named Moroccan (Bright Launch) as a half-sister.

Pletcher indicated that King of the Roxy will likely make his next start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile S. (G1) on November 4.
