The Wizard's Pick 3/Pick 4/Pick 6/Trifecta sheet gave out three suggested Pick 6 plays for the Hollywood Gold Cup card, and the larger two both hit! The 'Medium Play' called for a $216 investment and returned $34,717, including 8 consolation Pick 5's.

TOP PICK ROLLS AT ODDS OF 10-1, PAYING $23.60 AND KEYING $471 TRIFECTA OVER THE THREE OTHER SELECTIONS.

Here was the Wizard's writeup on this prestigious race:

# 1 MAST TRACK 12/1 The early scratch of probable heavy favorite Heatseeker due to a tender ankle leaves this race wide open, and potentially ripe for an upset. This colt, who is owned, bred, and trained by Hall Of Famer Bobby Frankel, certainly looks 'live' at expected big odds. He led most of the way when racing over a synthetic track for the first time March 28, finishing a close 2nd, then returned to score April 20 after pressing the pace and putting away the leader. Mast Track must have been doing awfully well after that win, because Frankel ran him back in the G1 Shoemaker May 26, a huge rise in class. Frankel doesn't put his horses into graded stakes without good reason, and Mast Track was hardly embarrassed when beaten less than 4 lengths by one of the top turf horses in the country. Frankel keeps him in G1 company today and adds blinkers to sharpen his early speed, a wise move in a field with little other early pace. Drawing the rail post also helps, and jockey Tyler Baze should be a good fit in this situation, as he does most of his best work with horses on or near the lead.

The 2007 meet began the Polytrack era at Del Mar. The switch to an all-weather-surface was mandated by the CTBA under the near universal belief that it is a kinder, more forgiving racing surface. Let's dive into the Track Bias data and see how much of a difference the new surface made in '07.

Track Bias

Traditionally, Del Mar's main track has favored horses that possess early speed. This has held true for both sprint and route races. However, there was compelling data to be found that suggested this trend was likely to change with the installation of Polytrack.

Like Del Mar, Hollywood Park's main track historically showed a preference for early speed. This early speed track bias at Hollywood Park abruptly came to end in the fall of 2006 after the installation of the Cushion Track surface. Would the same thing happen at Del Mar?

At Del Mar last summer, early speed held up well going 5 1/2 furlongs with 34 percent wire-to-wire winners. This dropped sharply to only 21 percent at the most common distance of 6 furlongs. Frontrunners fared slightly better at 6 1/2 furlongs with a win rate of 26 percent. Only one of the 19 races contested at 7 furlongs was won gate to finish.

Overall, tactical speed was still an asset sprinting. Across all sprints, the same number of Early (E) and Early/Presser (E/P) types won in 2007 (65 percent) as in 2006. Runners with a close stalking runstyle, E/P types, won at a higher rate, making up for the drop in frontrunning winners.

In dirt routes it was much more difficult for the early speed types. Sixty percent of the races were won by horses labeled as Pressers (P) or Sustained (S) types. At one mile 15 percent of the races were won wire to wire, but only 5 percent of those "thefts" occurred at 1 1/16 miles.

As for the Del Mar turf course, closers fared the best. Only 18 percent of all turf routes were won wire to wire. It was fairly consistent across all turf distances, but closers fared even better at the one mile distance. Only 31 percent of those races were won by either E or E/P types.

Read the rest of the story under "Handicapping Articles" in the Brisnet.com Library. Find out key trainer angles for Del Mar, plus discover which type of race has seen the favorite perform very poorly. Also, includes complete coverage of the Saratoga meet.

"I've been using BRIS for the past 15 months and I like it a lot. I use ALL-Ways Professional software and did use that program the day I won the contest. It has been a tremendous source of information that other services don't have.

I also rely on the Ultimate Past Performances. Since I've been using them, I have been winning more frequently. Both tools really help someone who is not even a professional [horseplayer]. ALL-Ways and the Ultimate PPs really work!"

The 2008 Breeders' Cup will be conducted on Friday, October 24th and Saturday, October 25th during the Oak Tree Meet at Santa Anita. Events over the past few years have created two important special circumstances related to handicapping this year's Breeders' Cup races.

Oak Tree vs. Santa Anita

Oak Tree is actually the name of a race meet, not the name of a race track. For many years, there has been an Oak Tree Meet run at Santa Anita during the fall of each year. Up until just a few years ago, all handicapping data for Oak Tree Meet races was maintained and published as Santa Anita information. But then, the racing industry changed to maintaining separate information/data for the Oak Tree Meet races, essentially treating Oak Tree as a track.

All Weather Surface

The "real dirt" race track at Santa Anita was changed to an all weather synthetic surface during September 2007, in time for the full 2007 Oak Tree Meet. This means the 2008 Breeders' Cup "dirt" sprints and "dirt" routes will actually be run on a synthetic surface for the first time in Breeders' Cup history.

The Special Help

BRIS and Frandsen Publishing have arranged for some special help for you to prepare for the 2008 Breeders' Cup. This special help applies not only to ALL-Ways software handicappers, but non ALL-Ways users will benefit as well.

All Weather Surface Batch Download

On the ALL-Ways data file page on the BRIS Web site, you can access a special All Weather Surface Batch Download file for Oak Tree that includes all races, both "dirt" and turf, that were run at the Oak Tree Meet since the synthetic surface was first installed. A total of 31 race cards are included. The batch file includes both the ALL-Ways data file and the matching Exotic Results data file for each race date. The price of the batch file is only $99.

Oak Tree Meet Subscription Package

Also accessible from the ALL-Ways Data File page is a special Meet Subscription Package for all race cards that will be run at the Oak Tree Meet in 2008, which begins on September 24th and concludes on October 26th. Note that this includes both days of the 2008 Breeders' Cup. The price for the entire Oak Tree Meet is only $135 and it includes the ALL-Ways data file and the corresponding Exotic Results data file for every race date.

Summary

By taking advantage of both these special programs, you will have easy and economical access to information/data for every race run at the Oak Tree Meet since the all weather surface track was installed, right up to and including the 2008 Breeders' Cup. This includes a total of 55 full race cards, in the range of 500 races.

If you are an ALL-Ways handicapper: You can use the Impact Value Analysis and the Gap Analysis in ALL-Ways to find the keys to playing these races. And, at handicapping time, you can use the race-track/race-type specific Handicapping Profiles automatically created by ALL-Ways as well as your own personal handicapping angles (ALL-Ways Custom Search Definitions). In other words, you will have all the advantages of extensive information/data that is "pure" and aimed directly at the 2008 Breeders' Cup races.

If you are not an ALL-Ways handicapper: You can install ALL-Ways software, which is available on the ALL-Ways Free Software Page on the BRIS Web site. This will let you use the analysis capabilities in ALL-Ways software to build and analyze your new database of Oak Tree Meet races. You can also use the ALL-Ways data file in the Meet Subscription Package to print the BRIS Ultimate Past Performances with Comments at no additional charge. Note: We recommend calling BRIS at 800-354-9206 to have the comprehensive ALL-Ways User Manual, pre-printed and in a 3-ring binder, mailed to you for a modest shipping and handling charge.

Taking advantage of both of these low cost, special offers is a solid investment to help you handicap the 2008 Breeders' Cup races. And remember that ALL-Ways software includes extensive all weather surface handicapping features.
