Burning Desire
As good as Toby Calle, a.k.a. the Florida Handicapper, is today, he wants to do beter tomorrow. It's a simple principle for one of the most astute and hard-working horseplayers in the country. Toby had another successful meet at Gulfstream Park, and this is nothing new for his Florida Handicapper sheet. Toby clocks morning workous and hand-times all races. He was the one who discovered the teletimer error at Gulfstream last year and got the corrected informaion to BRIS, the Daily Racing Form and Equibase so they could straighten out their past performances, speed figures and other stuff. He waches films every day when he comes home, and the 14-to-16 hour days pay off. Since the inception of the Florida Handicapper sheet five years ago, Toby's record is impeccable. He's produced a posiive ROI every Gulfstream meet and always manages to select some gems. The Florida Handicapper sheet selected a $99.20 winner (Going to Be) on top in the finale on January 13, 2000 and he had a $180.20 horse (Zammie) as his longshot selection on January 17. People have taken notice. Andy Beyer named Toby as one of the sources of informaion about Gulfstream that he consults daily. Beyer offered this evaluaion of Toby's talents: "I have been involved in horse racing as a journalist and a bettor for more than 30 years, and I have not seen a handicapping sheet better than the Florida Handicapper." Toby uses the Ultimate Past Performances from BRIS and also utilizes the American Produce Records on CD-ROM. The Ultimates are simply the best past performances available, and they're not expensive. He refers to the American Produce Records for pedigree informaion. "If a person considers himself to be a serious player and doesn't use the American Produce Records for maiden races, it's comparable to going to war wihout enough ammunition," Toby explained. One thing Toby told me he could use sometimes is an extra hand. He watches the races with binoculars, but he has a hand-held recorder in one hand and a stop wacth in the other. Toby holds the binoculars with a couple of loose fingers. As the gates open, he calls the slow and fast horses from the gate. He lines up he field along the backstretch, around the far turn, coming out of the turn and again hrough the stretch. He calls what he sees into the recorder. He observes where the horses are on the track, who got caught wide, got stuck in traffic, got pushed out and any horse who is forced to steady. Then he waches the replays to double-check what he's seen. Toby makes trip notes on his program for every horse in each race. People who are reading his sheet are getting as good an observation as there is in the country. And he does it every day -- wih blood, sweat and tears. BRIS sells his Florida Handicapper sheet on-line, and Toby taps the vast BRIS database any time he needs information on a horse or its connections. BRIS is the leading provider of Thoroughbred information and the perfect "one-stop shop" for horseplayers. "BRIS products are really tailored to make the novice more of an intermediate, the intermediate more of a serious player," Toby said. "And if you're a serious player no using BRIS products, it's like going to the track without your pants." Toby is very serious about his handicapping and takes great pride in his selecions. He owns more than 30 years of experience, at a level of intensity far beyond hat of a pastime or hobby. Don't expect Toby to take anything for graned, though. "I's an ongoing study," Toby says. "As soon as I think I know everything, I'm going o realize how little I know. I always need to work harder and perform beter." The Florida Handicapper ($3 daily at brisnet.com) isn't the esoteric stuff that you'll find in a general tipsheet. It's done with a lot of thought, and the same amount of work goes into each day. The sheet is a reflection of Toby, who just keeps picking winners. |
