Precocious SiresBy Richard J. Nilsen It may take a while, but readers' requests are often answered. Earlier this year I received an email from a Handicapper's Digest reader who had seen a column titled "Turf Sires You Can Count On." "Please continue to give us this wonderful information," he wrote. "Is there any chance you could do an article on top notch sires of two-year-olds with their percentage of debut wins? You did one some time ago and I found it to be absolutely wonderful." There are some stallions who are simply phenomenal at producing both first-time-out winners and a high percentage of two-year-old winners. All of the following are A or A+ debut stallions, according to the BRIS publication SIRE STATS 1998. AVENUE OF FLAGS: This son of Seattle Slew stands in California and, consequently, that's where most of his offspring are found. On the racetrack, his career was short but successful. His only loss in three starts was a placing in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship (G2). From 43 juvenile starters, he has sired a sensational 29 percent debut winners. CARSON CITY: A top mud sire, Carson City has had 60 percent two-year-old winners to starters and 21 percent debut winners. He has had 22 stakes winners from only five crops to race, resulting in a very high Stallion Production Index (SPI) of 2.76. CITIDANCER: This is a half-brother to the Grade 1 winners Will's Way (Easy Goer) and Willa On The Move (Assert [Ire]). The son of Dixieland Band has had an amazing 87 percent winners, regardless of age, and 57 percent two-year-old winners. His first timers score at a 23 percent clip. CRAFTY PROSPECTOR: The son of Mr. Prospector won seven of 10 career starts and was never out of the money. He has passed along that speed and talent to many of his offspring. In fact, his 12 crops to race have earned a staggering \$32 million plus. He sires 49 percent two-year-old winners and 20 percent debut winners. Crafty Prospector stands stud duty at Brookdale Farm near Versailles, Kentucky. DANZIG: If you don't know this stallion, you haven't been following the game long. His average horse earns \$106,025, according to the BRIS Online Stallion Directory. Now don't fall off your chair -- one-third of his juveniles win their first career start! That's right, 33 percent from 283 starters. Overall, 58 percent of his two-year-olds find the winner's circle during their initial seasons. DEERHOUND: From only 27 juvenile starters, this young sire has had 19 percent debut winners and 44 percent two-year-old winners. His offspring like it short as indicated by an average winning distance (AWD) of 6.2 furlongs. DIABLO: With only three crops to race, this is a fresh face on the season. The son of Devil's Bag sires 58 percent juvenile winners and 26 percent debut winners. In addition, the average winning distance (AWD) of all his offspring is only 5.9 furlongs, another indication that he passes along speed. DISTINCTIVE PRO: Another son of Mr. Prospector with a tendency to pass along brilliance and the will to win, Distinctive Pro has sired 84 percent winners overall. His juveniles score 18 percent in their first start, and 48 percent win as a two-year-olds. MEADOWLAKE: He won his only three starts, including a romp in the Arlington-Washington Futurity (G1) as a juvenile. The Darby Dan stallion has sired 26 percent debut winners from 132 starters. TILT THE STARS: This is one that few handicappers will recognize. Although only nine juveniles have started, four of them have scored in their first start. He gets extra credit for being a son of Danzig (see above) from a fabulous female family. His best runners so far have been the stakes winners Oh Nellie and Wilt the Tilt.
