The
third and final leg of the Triple Crown has often
been the most difficult for the top three-year-olds.
The most recent victim was Smarty Jones, who just
failed in the final yards to hold off longshot
Birdstone! There's a reason this leg is called the
Test of Champions, and this year's running
marks the 137th renewal of the 12 furlong race.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a computer
handicapping program designed by handicappers for
handicappers, a program you could use without being
a computer expert?
Wouldn't it be great if I could spend maybe 10
minutes at the computer to handicap an entire race
card? Then, I could spend only 20 or 30 minutes
handicapping 2 or 3 race cards. That would let me be
very selective with the races I play and still get
lots of wagering action. Now, that is a blueprint
for success!
Wouldn't it be great if the software could help
me plan my wagers before I go to the track, like
comparing the software's odds-line to the official
Morning Line Odds so I can spot probable overlays?
How about also helping me structure my Exotic
wagers? And, what if the software could show me the
kinds of races at each track that have the best
payoffs for each kind of wager? Imagine being that
well prepared before I even get to the track!
Wouldn't it be great if the software used a
comprehensive approach to handicapping by
determining each horse's suitability to the distance
and the surface, current form, class level and
ability to handle the probable pace and speed
demands of the race? What if it included a lot of
powerful handicapping factors that are not in the
hands of the general public? Maybe it could even
include handicapping factors designed by experts
like Tom Brohamer based on the Sartin Methodology,
Tom Hambleton, William Scott and Bill Quirin.
Wouldn't it be great if the software didn't use
some fixed method to handicap the races, but instead
was able to automatically adjust its handicapping
for each specific kind of race run at each specific
track I handicap? And, what if it would
automatically take into account the prevailing track
bias and the pace match-up scenario in the race?
This means handicapping would be both race type and
race track specific! Imagine software that
understands the differences between 6, 6 1/2 and 7
furlongs.
Wouldn't it be great if the software not only
did a great job of finding the winning horses, but
was also able to spot the most likely place, show
and 4th place horses as well, including pointing out
the best Key-Horse candidates? This would really
help me with my Exacta, Trifecta and Superfecta
wagers. And, what if the software could look at the
apparent non-contenders to see if there is a
possibility one could "wake up" today and score at a
big price, sort of a "Dangerous Non-Contender"
report?
Wouldn't it be great if the software could
actually handicap first time starters and integrate
the results with all the other horses into the
ALL-Ways odds-line? I really would like to hit some
of those big payoffs that first timers generate when
they do better than expected!
Wouldn't it be great if I had some control over
the software and could apply some of my own
handicapping ideas. I don't want a "black box". What
I really want is a handicapping toolbox where I can
select and use the tools that suit my interests and
style of play.
Wouldn't it be great if I could easily handicap
a race multiple times from completely different
perspectives, sort of my own "Consensus Pick"
capability? And, what if I could scratch and
un-scratch horses by simply clicking buttons to see
how the handicapping results change? Of course, I
would want to be able to print the handicapping
reports or to view all of this on my computer
screen. Like I said, I want to be able to use the
software the way that suits me best.
Wouldn't it be great if the software could show
me the Impact Value power and the flat bet
profitability of every handicapping factor for every
different kind of race run at every track I
handicap? How about showing me how well horses
perform based on the size of their advantage for
each key handicapping factor, a Gap Analysis sort of
thing. And, what if the software would actually show
me how well its handicapping profiles are working
based on their win, place and show percentages,
average mutuel payoffs and return-on-investment?
Imagine software that is not afraid to show you how
well it is working. Oh well, I can dream anyway.
As
long as I am dreaming, wouldn't it be great if there
was a way to search all race cards being run in
North America to build a custom data file for the
software made up of only the kinds of races I like
to play at only the tracks I like to play? And, what
if I could even specify the amount of early pace
pressure in the races such as races with lone front
runners and/or races with lots of early pace
pressure that often set up for high priced closers?
What a great tool this would be for playing
simulcast races and for on-line account wagering
..... my own personal, custom race cards!
Wouldn't it be the greatest if the software was
actually free? And, what if I could get some free
data files to give the software a try and to build
up a database for my favorite track?

Do
you have a definition for quality early speed? My
definition would be a horse that can contend the
early pace, then finish strongly. Just looking at
the running lines can be misleading. Fortunately, a
tool available with many of the BRIS handicapping
materials can help us determine who'll hang tough,
and who'll be fluff, down the lane. It's called
BRIS LATE PACE.
My
basic premise is that almost every speed horse can
run a fast half-mile or six furlongs when asked.
What we want to ascertain is what will happen AFTER
the pace battle - which of the speed horses has the
ability to "draw off" and get that big win for us. A
lot of the time the quality speed will be apparent
because of other factors (big speed figures, class
edge, etc.) and will be really chalky. But sometimes
the horse will jump out of the page to people who
use the BRIS pace figures and you can get really
nice odds. The 2005 Lexington Stakes was certainly
one of those races.
Here
were the main early pace players:
1)
Actxecutive - Not really fast or classy, but he
will be an early pace factor for as long he can
last. Never run a late pace figure over 86. Toss.
2)
Coin Silver - His running lines indicate a "need
the lead type," but he is very lightly raced (4
starts) and owns 2 late pace figures of 102 or
higher. His last "final speed" figure of 102 almost
meets par, and his trainer, Todd Pletcher, wins a
lot of these races (21% in graded stakes). 6/1 ML,
13/1 at post.
3)
Going Wild - Got thoroughly 'spanked' by Bellamy
Road two weeks ago (a 41-length defeat), and wheels
right back for Lukas. Could very well be going
backwards, and even if he isn't, he is only 4-1
despite never winning anywhere besides Santa Anita.
We'll try to beat him in all the gimmicks.
4)
Rockport Harbor - Has the media following
because of his similar connections to Smarty Jones,
but he is not the same level of talent as Smarty and
everyone has heard about his physical problems. At
3/5 he appears to be a massive play against in the
win hole. Since there are four speed horses lined
up, no one figures to get an easy lead. But can any
of these horses FINISH?

Note
that Coin Silver has a significantly better late
pace number and a very competitive speed number. He
appears to be the "quality speed" in the Lexington.
Often this combination is overbet, but we are
getting 13/1 today. This is atypical, but don't be
afraid to jump on this opportunity when it happens.
The only question was if Coin Silver could pass
horses, but his moderate E2 numbers would almost
certainly put him in the second flight, and then you
just have to hope he is a stakes-quality racehorse.
He won like a champ, drawing off by 3 1/2 lengths
and paying $28.80. I wish all double-digit horses
were this easy!

Hollywood Park, Arlington Park, Remington, River
Downs, and Thistledown recently joined a growing
list of tracks offering dime superfectas,
also offered at Sam Houston, Hawthorne, Keeneland
and the current Lone Star meet. TwinSpires
