BECOME A PEDIGREE EXPERT OVERNIGHT!

Maiden Stats 1998

"Handicappers with a copy... will have a serious information edge."

Dave Litfin
Daily Racing Form

With statistics for more than 32,000 two-year-olds of 1998, MAIDEN STATS is the ultimate guide for analyzing runners' pedigrees, which lead to blockbuster prices. Everything one needs to know about a horse's breeding is in this jam-packed guide, including the dosage index, sales history, top sibling information, and sire and dam statistics. If there is mud, turf or distance capability on either side of the family, MAIDEN STATS 1998 will tell you. You also will know right away if a debut runner is bred to win first time out.

MAIDEN STATS goes beyond just two-year-old maiden events. If a runner attempts a route for the first time, the stats are there. If a runner attempts the grass, the reader will know if the horse is bred to love it. This year's book is useful for as many years as there are horses (in the book) who attempt new circumstances, i.e. first time turf. MAIDEN STATS, which is published every April, is available for \$99.95 plus \$6.00 shipping and handling (Kentucky residents add 6 percent sales tax).

WIZARD PICKS REAL QUIET!

Proving ONCE AGAIN Why He's America's Leading Handicapper
Real Quiet -- \$18.80!

The WIZARD nailed the Run for the Roses for the second consecutive year with Real Quiet's 8-1 upset in the Kentucky Derby. Last year, the Wizard selected \$10 winner Silver Charm as well as the \$31 exacta. He then went on to pick the winner of the '97 Preakness. The Wizard's Belmont analysis and wagering strategies will be available online Wednesday night, June 3. It's the best \$8 you'll spend.

THE WIZARD'S 1998 KENTUCKY DERBY SELECTIONS (\$8.00)

DRY TRACK SELECTIONS

1st-REAL QUIET
2nd-INDIAN CHARLIE
3rd-CAPE TOWN
4th-HALORY HUNTER

WET TRACK SELECTIONS

1st-INDIAN CHARLIE
2nd-CAPE TOWN
3rd-HALORY HUNTER
4th-REAL QUIET

1st Selection-REAL QUIET-Baffert/Desormeaux (4-1)
NOTE: 1st selection only on a dry track. Becomes my fourth selection if the track is muddy or sloppy.

Trainer Bob Baffert is sitting on top of the racing world with his conquests with Silver Charm and the outstanding win record he accomplished at the recently concluded Santa Anita winter/spring meeting. Baffert can do no wrong. Give him the goods and he simply gets the job done. He is a great model for this game as he is both articulate and humorous but always humble and at the same time exuding confidence. Baffert's best friend on and off the field is Mike Pegram who just happens to be the owner of Real Quiet. Pegram gave him his start in the thoroughbred game when he converted over from quarter horses. What better gift to return to his friend than winning this years Kentucky Derby.

Real Quiet is a perfect example of a Baffert's wizardry. He showed quality as a two year old defeating Artax in the Hollywood Futurity. He had only one win to his credit before that race and that was a maiden victory. Following his maiden win he shipped to Churchill Downs where he ran a strong third in a Grade 3 stake. Real Quiet may have been best that day as he was bumped from both sides leaving the gate. He was forced to rally from far back and was gaining on the top two finishers at the wire. That race turned out to be a good one as the winner Cape Town went on to become one the top three year olds and is one of my selections to run well in this years Kentucky Derby. Following his victory in the Hollywood Futurity, Real Quiet ran his career worst performance in a stake at Golden Gate January 18. He was beaten 22 1/2 lengths over sloppy track he was unable to handle. Baffert sent him to the sidelines for a two month freshening. He returned on March 14 in the Grade 2 San Felipe and rebounded with his strongest performance with a second place finish, beaten a neck, by Artax. Artax set a pressured but comfortable pace racing inside. Real Quiet and rider Kent Desormeaux made a strong middle move while widest as the pace quickened with a strong middle fraction. Real Quiet dug in tenaciously but was unable to overhaul a very sharp rival at the wire. Real Quiet galloped out strong past the wire suggesting to me another good effort would be forthcoming.

That effort would come in the Santa Anita Derby. Breaking from an outside post in a field of seven, Real Quiet was allowed to drop further off the pace than in the San Felipe. His uncoupled entry-mate, Indian Charlie was stalking the pacesetter Orville And Wilbur with Artax racing in third. As the pace quickened on the turn, so did Indian Charlie. Orville And Wilbur was unable to keep up with the pace pressure and faltered badly. Artax was also unable to keep up, and the only other horse to do any running was Real Quiet. At the point of his rally midway on the turn Desormeaux briefly lost his left rein which caused a slight lose of momentum, just enough to hamper his rally. The way Desormeaux rode Real Quiet through the stretch indicated to me that this was not a must win situation. No one was beating Indian Charlie and Desormeaux could see this before they hit the eighth pole. In the final 100 yards Desormeaux did not aggressively get into his mount, content to finish second. Real Quiet's second place finish was clearly a move forward towards the ultimate goal, the Kentucky Derby.

A quick mention must be made concerning Kent Desormeaux. This is one tremendous rider, when his head is on straight and he gets into a winning groove. He is his own worst enemy, letting his temper and arrogance get the best of him. Desormeaux comes into this years Kentucky Derby at the top of his game. He comes off an outstanding Santa Anita meeting and it has carried over to the opening days of the Hollywood Park meet. He is riding with the utmost confidence and this can prove very important in the success of Real Quiet on Saturday.

Real Quiet has taken to the Churchill Downs strip as evidenced by a sparkling five furlong workout on April 18 in 1:00 1/5 by The Racing Form clockers. Two people I have contact with who have been reporting the workouts to me clocked him in :59 4/5. His splits for four furlongs were :48 which meant he went his final eighth in :11 4/5 which is outstanding.

On Tuesday April 28, Real Quiet once again worked great, with my clocker timing him in :59 1/5 for five furlongs.

Real Quiet is coming into the Derby in peak form. I love his stride and he gives me every indication that he will perform well at the 1 1/4 mile distance. Indian Charlie will go off a shorter price than his uncoupled mate. Bob Baffert has been very high on Indian Charlie before he even made his first start. I am sure Real Quiet has turned out a pleasant surprise for him even though he knew the colt had quality. You can be sure both colts will be at their best on Saturday, but I know deep down in his heart, Baffert will be rooting a bit harder for Real Quiet so both he and his best friend Mike Pegram can dance down the aisles together to get their pictures taken in the winners circle.
