Stanley Bavlish wins the
Handicapper of the Year Title
Long time BRIS customer Stanley Bavlish defeated over 250 horse racing handicappers to win the 8th Annual NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas. The lifelong handicapper stormed from mid-pack on day two to capture the crown of Handicapper of the Year. For his efforts he was rewarded with over $400,000 in prize money. Stanley beat out some of the best handicappers in the country using Brisnet.com software and our signature product, the Ultimate Past Performances. HANDICAPPING STYLE "I am an 'everything' guy. The more data I have to work with the better," explained Stanley. "I enjoy the process of digesting and dissecting all the information. Part of this process is drawing upon my experiences as a horseplayer. Based on these experiences I have developed certain theories over the years. These theories help me narrow the field down to the most capable horses." "Always follow your own counsel. The first time I attended the track with my brother, he talked me off a longshot winner. I told myself never again." THE CHAMPIONSHIP "On day one of the contest, I just grinded it out. No big hits. Good enough to put me in 89th place." "On day two things starting clicking for me when [longshot] McCann's Mojave won. What turned me on to him was his BRIS pace figures. They were huge... I want horses with running styles that fit the race and track. The Ultimate Summary page helps me determine the right type of horse to look for. The Track Bias and Run Style stats help me piece the race together. MEMBER SINCE '88 "I have been a BRIS member since 1988. At the risk of sounding like a commercial the reason I have stayed so long is because I have always been treated with respect. If I have problem it gets resolved quickly. You understand how important it is to have the right information." explained Stanley. "If I don't have the Brisnet information, I feel like I am not ready to go to battle. Bottom line, I am comfortable with the BRIS data. I feel the same way about TwinSpires." The complete NHC recap with more quotes from Stanley is now online at Brisnet.com. In the eight years of the National Handicapping Championship, which has been held at either MGM or Bally's Sportsbook, Brisnet.com members have won over $2 million in prize winnings. All eight NTRA Handicappers of the Year are members of Brisnet.com. During the month of March, you may download 3 ALL-Ways data files absolutely free! Here are some of the powerful tools ALL-Ways provides for you to take advantage of your Race Databases. Automatic Creation of Handicapping Profiles: ALL-Ways uses over 80 comprehensive Key Handicapping Factors covering each horse's suitability to the distance and surface, class level, current form and ability to handle the probable pace and speed demands of the race. One mouse click and ALL-Ways automatically looks at each individual race on the card you are handicapping, finds all similar races in your Race Database for the track and identifies the optimum set of Key Handicapping Factors that work best in combination with each other to find win, place and show horses. ALL-Ways then automatically creates customized Handicapping Profiles for each individual race on the card. These profiles are both race-type and race-track specific. Profile Performance: The Database Run Analysis evaluates the performance of each of your Handicapping Profiles including how well they select win, place, show and 4th place finishers, their average payoffs and flat bet profitability and even the best way to structure your Exacta, Trifecta, Daily Double and Pick 3 wagers. What other handicapping software gives you that functionality? ALL-Ways Angle Assistant -combine handicapping factors in order to find the best win percent, ROI and more. A powerful handicapping angle involves a runner exiting either an exceptionally fast or slow paced race, which positively or negatively affected the chances of this particular horse. The result can be a running line that is "disguised" due to the pace scenario that occurred in that race. Brisnet recently added BRIS Race Shapes to their past performances, and it's a helpful tool for identifying these runners in a quick and efficient manner. RACE SHAPES EXPLANATION The BRIS Race Shapes measure how fast the leader ran relative to the average leader time for the race's final time/speed rating. The faster the leader's pace, the higher the BRIS Race Shape (e.g. +7). The slower the leader's pace, the lower the BRIS Race Shape (e.g. -7). The BRIS Race Shapes correspond to the first and second calls of a race. The first BRIS Race Shape value corresponds to the first call (2f call for most sprints; and 4f call for most routes). The second BRIS Race Shape value corresponds to the second call (4f call for most sprints; and 6f call for most routes). This enables the user to quickly identify which segment(s) of the race were fastest and slowest (relative to each calls average pace for the final time). Like the BRIS Pace Ratings, the BRIS Race Shapes use a fixed scale of two (2) points-per-length. For example, a ";+6" Race Shape represents a pace which is three (3) lengths faster than normal. USING THE RACE SHAPES AS A HANDICAPPING TOOL There are a variety of ways to benefit from using the BRIS Race Shapes. A primary use of the BRIS Race Shapes is to easily identify horses which were advantaged/disadvantaged by unusually fast or slow paced races. Generally speaking, horses with a late running style want a fast pace upfront to be most effective. And, conversely, horses with an early running style want a softer pace to be most effective. Whenever a pace is unusually fast or slow, evaluate whether the horse was advantaged or disadvantaged by the pace. Anticipate possible improvement from horses which were disadvantaged by the pace of their recent races, and view skeptically the performances of horses which were advantaged by the pace of their recent races. In the recent Sham Stakes at Santa Anita, the Triple Crown hopeful RAVEL stood out based on the race shapes of his two lifetime starts. In his debut at Keeneland, he broke from the disadvantageous rail (one hole) going seven furlongs, always a difficult distance for a first time starter. A slow pace up front is indicated by the -12 and -15 first and second call race shape figures, respectively. The -12 tells us that the first call was run by the leader 12 points slower than par. Since two points equal one length on the BRIS Pace Rating scale, this represents six lengths. The second call, -15 race shape, was seven and a half lengths slower than par. Despite it being his first start, breaking from a tough post at a difficult distance, and getting a slow pace up front, Ravel finished well and ran a winning race in a runner-up effort. Next out Ravel had enough going against him when shipped across the country to Hollywood Park and making his first start around two turns on the Cushion Track. In addition, he wouldn't get a whole lot more help pace-wise on this day either. Despite moderate and even early fractions (-5 and -9 race shape), Ravel took the lead by the top of the stretch and drew off to a decisive 3 1/2 length score. Impressive! Of those two performances, in both of which he earned huge Late Pace Ratings, Ravel was a confident play in the Sham. The well bred son of Fusaichi Pegasus didn't light up any toteboards on this afternoon, but he was an authoritative winner that afternoon and is now a major player on the Triple Crown trail.
WHERE TO FIND THE RACE SHAPES BRIS Race Shapes are included in BRIS Premium, Quick Play and Ultimate PP's (condensed versions excluded). The Race Shapes are found on each past performance line next to the Pace Rating section. Experiment with this new addition to the Brisnet Past Performances. The Race Shapes offer a unique and effective handicapping tool that the majority of the wagering public is not taking advantage of.
