Conquer the Derby with Brisnet.com

From updated daily news in the Handicapper's Edge to superior performance ratings in the Ultimate Past Performances, Brisnet.com has the tools to conquer the Run for the Roses. The Kentucky Derby is May 7, and full-card reports will be online beginning Wednesday evening, May 4. Here's how information from Brisnet.com can help you score on the big race day.

The Ability to Win the Derby
You can use whatever everyone else is using, or you can upgrade with the Ultimate PPs from Brisnet.com. The Class and Speed ratings found in reports such as the Ultimates and ALL-Ways data files are the keys to determining which runners have the ability to win.

The Derby winner each year seems to be found among the top BRIS ratings. Longshots Charismatic and War Emblem entered the race with one of the top BRIS Speed Ratings, and War Emblem came in off a monsterous, triple-digit Late Pace Rating. Don't overlook runners that have earned competitive, triple-digit numbers in one of their most recent two starts.

Predict the Pace Scenario
Although horses don't always run to what's on paper, BRIS Pace Ratings give handicappers the best chance to accurately predict the expected pace setup. It doesn't matter if it's $5,000 claimers at Charlestown or the Kentucky Derby; pace ratings are a vital handicapping tool.

Identify Who is Training Well for the Race
You can rely on the basic workout information in the Past Performances or you find the answers in the FREE Handicapper's Edge Newsletter. Start your day, every day, leading up to the first Saturday in May by reading this great online newsletter. Only the Edge offers comprehensive daily coverage of all the expected runners, including detailed workout reports and pre-race quotes from the connections.

Handicapper's Report clocker information will be available for Churchill Downs the week of the race. The beauty of this service is their comprehensive workout staff has been following horses from New York to Southern California all year long.

Factor in Track Bias
The Ultimate Past Performances includes the Track Bias and Race Summary page, which details how the track has played this meet and the past week. You'll quickly see which running styles and post positions are winning most frequently at each distance and surface. Quite often, an important trend is easily spotted, and this can be especially pertinent when handicapping the KY Derby undercard.

Who Can Get the Distance?
The Ultimate PPs provide the AWD (average winning distance) for both the sire and dam's sire of each runner. The higher the AWD, the greater the stamina in the pedigree. A runner with AWDs higher than 7.0 on both sides of the pedigree indicate an inherent preference for route races. An 8.0 or higher indicates a strong source of stamina.

Both the American Produce Records (APRs) CD-ROM and Maiden Stats provide the necessary sire and dam data to accurately analyze a runner's pedigree. The APRs is the absolute best tool for researching the female side of the family. Both CD-ROMS were recently released and available through the online bookstore at Brisnet.com.

Summary
The only name you need to know on Derby Day is
Brisnet.com. No other site offers the same wealth of information. Beginning Wednesday night, May 4, Brisnet.com will post reports online to help you have a winning day. Good luck!

Keys to a Kentucky Derby Winner

Let's take a look at a few handicapping factors that can help us narrow the large KY Derby field down to the most likely winner, the horse with the best chance of being draped with roses on May 7.

    PEDIGREE
A runner whose sire has produced winners at this classic distance is more likely to fare well in the Derby. It's an added bonus when the broodmare sire also provides stamina. Some of the best 10f pedigrees include: Bandini, Consolidator, Greeley's Galaxy, High Fly, Noble Causeway, Sun King, and Wilko.

Log onto the Handicapper's Edge during Derby week for in-depth bloodline analyses of the expected entries.

    MORNING WORKS
Over the years many horses have failed to handle the Churchill surface, so it is essential that the trainer has allowed his runner time to acclimate. More important than the times of the works is how often the runner has trained over the Churchill track. It is not uncommon in the Derby to see the exacta (the top two finishers) completed by runners who worked two or more times over the track.

Prefer a horse with, ideally, three works over the track, one of which is marked "handily." This indicates the runner was really asked to stretch out over the ground. We want a well prepared horse who arrived early in Louisville.

    TRAINERS
The top horsemen are usually the ones seen in the winner's circle at the end of the day. Trainers such as Nick Zito and D. Wayne Lukas are masters at getting the most out of their runners for the Derby.

    RUNNING STYLE
Most of the in-the-money finishers since 1980 could be described as one-run closers, or horses running in the back half of the field at the early calls of the race (P or S types). It is vital to select horses who figure to be closing in the final stages.

Construct your trifecta wagers around the following race profile: typically, two of the top three finishers will be closers, with one speed horse hanging on for part. You may just nail a blockbuster payoff!

    PREP RACES/LATE PACE
Closely analyze each horse's past two races. Note the closing kick demonstrated in each event. The racing information site, Brisnet.com, offers a Late Pace Rating in their past performances, which accurately measures the finishing time of each and every runner. The higher the figure, the faster the horse finished from the stretch call to the wire.

Runners who were backing up in the prep races are not likely to appreciate Churchill's long stretch. Horses who were finishing well at the end of the prep races are the most dangerous entries on May 7.

Runners with strong triple-digit Late Pace figs this year include Afleet Alex and Bellamy Road.

As for key prep races, the overwhelming majority of winners have prepped in the Blue Grass Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, or Wood Memorial. Add the Florida Derby to that mix, especially with the change in date to April.

    SUMMARY
Still can't separate your contenders? Give the final edge to the most consistent horse who has recently run a career-best Speed Rating. It's amazing how often the nice priced Derby winner will be found among runners with one of the best BRIS Speed Ratings and who appears to be rounding into top form.

Finally, get your wagers down early through TwinSpires.com, then sit back and enjoy another renewal of the Greatest Two Minutes in Sports.
