Y2K - Are You Compliant? (Part Two)Last month, in our Handicapping Times, we wrote about the now infamous year 2000 computer compliance problem. This is an important issue, one that impacts all aspects of information technology, perhaps even your personal computer. The basis of the problem relates to the computer's internal clocks and the recognition of the digits "00" correctly. Models manufactured prior to mid-1997 may interpret the numbers to represent the year 1900, or not recognize the number at all. This could result in calculation of erroneous information, or even a total malfunction of the system. What exactly is Y2K compliance? If your PC is Y2K compliant, it means that your system properly recognizes the dates in the 21st century, including leap years, and it will handle the transition from 1999 to 2000. Compliance also means that all software and programs you utilize will recognize these same functions as well. So, what to do now? - First and foremost, be aware of the issue, particularly if you have an older computer. Read all you can about the problem. Informational sites can be accessed through the internet using your favorite search engine, like Yahoo, Excite, or Lycos. Be wary of what you read, however, as anyone can post anything on the internet. Year 2000 issues and updates are thoroughly discussed at most computer manufacturers' home pages. If you run Windows, Y2K informational updates are available from Microsoft. If you are comfortable working in DOS, you can test your system for Y2K compliance. Hardware components involved are the real-time clock (RTC), and the Basic Input-Output System (BIOS). The BIOS is responsible for setting the century indicator in the "RTC." If your computer's BIOS does not interpret the year 2000 accurately, the system clock will not update correctly when you reboot your system. If you don't understand working in DOS, it's best to consider either professional assistance, or utilize a Y2K commercial software compliance program. If your computer fails the compliance tests, programs are available to solve the problem. If the computer's BIOS fails the test, you're probably better off putting your PC out to pasture. Also, don't forget to check with your individual software vendors for their Y2K compliance, particularly as it relates to your license agreements and subscription expiration dates. Above all, if you do nothing else, "back-up" your files before the New Year. This means copying programs and files to disks or tapes for safekeeping. In a worst case scenario, if your computer does crash, you will at least have copies of your important information for retrieval. Routine file "back-up" is good practice. The "millennium bug" has now given you more reason to protect your files and program. We continue to test all of our programs and reports at Bloodstock Research for compliance, as we have done for the past year. We are doing everything we can to make sure you, our customer, continues to receive accurate information so you can successfully, and profitably, handicap Year 2000 race cards.
