As the name suggests Multicaps is a multiple handicapping tool for both beginners and professionals. It can be used as a "black box" type program to suggest picks or it can be used as a design-your-own handicappi
ng tool. Multicaps has been designed to be easy to install and use, and yet provides a level of power, sophistication and flexibility that cannot be found elsewhere. Users can be up and running Multicaps within minutes but will only fully appreciate the p
ower after using, modifying and adjusting the program to fit their particular handicapping style and the constantly changing conditions and biases at the various tracks around the country.
Multicaps is an indispensable tool in preparing for upcoming races or understanding what has happened in past races. It can be used by itself or as a supplement to other handicapping tools such as the BRIS Ultra Past Performance report.
Users can let the Multicaps default settings choose their picks based upon the proprietary Multicaps Odds Line or modify the settings to determine and create their own value lines. The Multicaps Odds Line by itself is consistent at spotting winners or va
lue plays straight out of the box. Multicaps real power however, lies in the built-in flexibility for the user to adjust the settings for the factors that are important at your track rather than trying to fit all tracks into the same handicapping model.<
/P>
Exotics players will be amazed at the information gleaned from the models database. The exacta and trifecta models database will put in clear perspective the kind of horses regularly paying off. If it is a mix of running styles that is
arriving in the money, you will see it. You will be able to spot the patterns and wager accordingly.
The Multicaps Models function gives the user the power to import the new BRIS exotic results data file to help analyze what has happened in the past so that the user can more accurately predict what will happen in the future. It takes t
he guesswork out of determining the handicapping factors that need to be emphasized or downgraded. Users can build-up a database of results and use the database to analyze the factors consistently producing winners.
For simulcast fans Multicaps will quickly import, analyze and produce winners at virtually every track in North America. Users can be ready and armed with a computer analysis of a whole simulcast card with only a few minutes of computin
g. Multicaps has the power to emphasize certain factors at one track and totally ignore the same factors at another track.
If you are an angle player, Multicaps is the tool for you. Multicaps quickly computes and ranks each horse on the race card relative to the factor you choose. If it is top speed rating last time out, you can have that information on eve
ry horse being simulcast. If you are looking for class ratings, Multicaps will sort it out. Almost every betting angle can be quickly and easily sorted and ranked. You can have your printouts and picks under your arms in minutes.
Pace handicappers will be delighted at what Multicaps has to offer. Multicaps has screen after screen of pace information. If you are interested in feet-per-second calculations, turn-time, velocity, early pace, sustained pace, % medium,
total pace, running style, early speed points, late pace or whatever you use to determine how this group of horses is going to run together today, Multicaps is for you.
Another great benefit of Multicaps is that the same data file (*.MCP) used by Multicaps can be used in conjunction with BRISs Ultra Past Performance software to print professional quality past performance reports without any additional
cost to the user.
Best of all, you do not need to be a computer programmer to use the program. It has been designed with your needs in mind. The program will run and pick winners effectively as-is, but the more you get to know and use Multicaps the easie
r it will be for you to spot trends and make adjustments. Multicaps will help you get your share of the 75% - 80% returned on every dollar bet at the track.
The Multicaps software and this manual have been designed to be as user-friendly as possible, while maintaining a high level of sophistication and power. The intent is to make the screens and options intuitive so
that the Multicaps handicapping process flows naturally and logically. The software menu options and screens are designed to flow from left to right with the options and sub-options appearing in outline form.
The first few pages of this manual gives an overview of how to install and use Multicaps and provide the user with a general understanding of what it is and what it does. Detailed information about the various screens and functions foll
ow this overview and is arranged in the same order as if the user were looking at the computer screen and choosing each menu option from left to right. Before moving to the next main option to the right (as viewed on the computer screen) the manual explor
es the various options and sub-options found in the drop-boxes underneath the main headers. Following the detailed information is an alphabetical listing of the terms and abbreviations used in Multicaps.
MINIMUM COMPUTER HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
IBM PC or compatible with a 486 Processor, 2 megabytes of RAM and 4 megabytes of available hard disk space. A modem is required in order to download race data from BRIS.
1. Click on the Multicaps icon to start the program.
2. Choose 3. Select sub-option # 4. Choose the sample file 5. Choose 6. Select a race to view from the July 2nd card for Lone Star Park.
The following is an overview on how to use Multicaps after installation. In order to get more specific information on any of the specific items or processes see the detailed description of each of the menu option
s and sub-options following this overview.
1) Download a MCP data file from BRIS into the directory assigned for Multicaps data. The default directory as shipped is C:\MC4DATA\. NOTE: A sample MCP file for Lone Star Park (LSX0702.MCP)
is copied into the data directory when Multicaps is initially installed.
2) Once the data file (*.mcp) has been downloaded into the data directory, start Multicaps by double-clicking its program icon.
3) Choose IMPORT from the main menu and then select sub-option 1) or 2) depending on whether you intend to import data files for one track or several. A box will appear with a list of the files currently i
n the data directory that are available for importing. Multicaps will list the data files regardless of whether they are compressed (ending with a *.ZIP extension) or whether they are raw (ending with a *.MCP extension). Select the track file or date (if
importing multiple files) and hit the ENTER key.
NOTE: 4) After the data has been imported, it is now ready to VIEW by selecting this option from the main menu. A box will appear in which all the files that have been previously imported will be available for v
iewing. Select the race to view and press ENTER on your keyboard.
5) The VIEW screen will now appear listing the horses in the race and various rankings and information about them depending on the default view that is listed in the default configuration. Printouts of the various rankings and screen
s may be achieved by selecting PRINT from this screen.
The original default view as shipped from BRIS is the CLASS|SPEED screen. The original SORT from top to bottom is by SPEED and the original COLOR SORT is by the BRIS CLASS ratings. Any or all of these default setting
s may be changed by the user depending upon their particular handicapping style or factors that are currently dominant at the track(s) being handicapped.
The VIEW screen contains much information and will take a few minutes to digest. The top or first line at the top is the menu bar from which various selections and changes may be made.
The second line under the menu bar includes race date, track code, race number, distance, surface (dirt is brown, turf is green), type (maiden, claiming, allowance, handicap, stakes), claiming price or purse value, age and gender eligib
ility requirements, and the current screen view is highlighted in red.
The third line (from left to right) lists the criteria for the sort order from top to bottom and the various function keys (F2-F10) available to sort the horses according to the factor underneath them.
The fourth line shows the factor being used to sort by color and to the right, the factors available to be sorted in this screen view. The factor highlighted indicates the current top to bottom sort order. The color ranking hierarchy fr
om top to bottom is RED, WHITE, BLUE, YELLOW, BLACK, GRAY. If two or more horses have the same rating for the factor being sorted by color, they will all appear in the same color.
The fifth line shows the PAR ratings for this type of race for the factors listed above each. The horses are listed underneath the broken line and are shown in order from top to bottom according to the factor highlighted in the fourth l
ine.
If the race has already occurred and the Exotic Race Data (*.XRD) file has been imported the order of finish and payoff values (including exotics) will be listed in the bottom section. Otherwise this section of the screen will appear bl
ank.
Many choices may be made from the VIEW screen the most important of which is the default configuration. The default settings determine which factors are most important and determine which past pacelines are being sel
ected to determine rankings. These settings may be modified by selecting CHANGE and then DEFAULT CONFIGURATION. These settings are dealt with in detail in the sections following this overview.
Perhaps the next most important menu option from the VIEW screen is SELECTPACELINE. This option allows the user to review the pacelines that have been automatically selected by the default setup. The user has the option to choose a diff
erent paceline or multiple pacelines (up to 3) to be averaged. The user even has the option to modify a paceline if none of the past performance line are indicative of the race the horse is likely to run today.
Another frequently used option from this screen is the VIEW option. Choosing this option will allow you to choose different factors to view. Each of the various VIEW options are dealt with in detail in the section following this overvie
w.
6) The MODELS functions are a key element in making full use of the power of Multicaps. In order to make use of this function, the user must import the Exotic Results Data (*.XRD) file for the Multicaps MC
P data files existing in the data directory. By using this function you will be able to spot trends and dominant race factors that are occurring at each track you handicap. You will also be able to track the RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI) of various factors (
such as speed, class, pace, odds, etc.) according to your current default configurations. Adjust your configurations to emphasize the peculiarities at your track and see the difference in your ROI. An ROI of 1.00 represents the break-even point for consis
tently betting on a specific factor. For more information on MODELS see the detailed information that follows. A sample Exotic Results Data (*.XRD) file is copied into the data directory at the time of installation.
The real power and sophistication of Multicaps is the combination of the best that computer handicapping has to offer with the powers of human observation. While the user can allow Multicaps to select a high percent of winners based upo
n single factors such as speed, class, Multicaps odds line, or morning odds line, the user can maximize the potential of Multicaps by maintaining a results database. With this history you can make changes to adjust to the factors that are actually paying
off at the track(s) you are playing.
DETAILED EXPLANATION OF THE VARIOUS SCREENS, MENU ITEMS AND OPTIONS
The following detailed explanation of the various screens and available options is arranged in outline style. The order of presentation is as though the user were viewing the program from startup starting at the
left side of the screen and choosing the available menu options, exploring each sub-options and then selecting the next main option to the right. An alphabetized glossary of the various definitions and abbreviations found in Multicaps is appended to the e
nd of the manual.
This menu option allows the user to import new data into the Multicaps program. The following are the three data files utilized by Multicaps and their computer file name extensions: the past performance data
file (*.MCP), and the exotic results data file (*.XRD). The only file type that is required for minimum use of Multicaps is the past performance data file (*.MCP). The other file types add functionality and allow the user to obtain the full benefit of the
Multicaps. The exotic results data file (*.XRD) gives the user the results and payoffs (including exotic payoffs). The XRD file allows the user to make full use of the MODELS functionality of Multicaps. See the MODELS heading to learn more about this fun
ction. These files may be obtained (downloaded via computer) from BRIS. The following import functions assume that the user has already downloaded the file(s) from BRIS and that the file(s) is located in the default DATA directory. See UTILITIES to learn
how to set the default data directory.
1) Card - MCP Data File (One Track)
Selecting this option will import a particular race card (*.MCP) for one track on a specific date.
2) Day - MCP Data Files (Multiple Tracks)

Selecting this option will import the exotic results data file (*.XRD) for one track on a specific date.
6) Day - Exotic Results Data Files (Multiple Tracks)
Selecting this option will import the exotic results data files (*.XRD) for all races on a specific date.
Handicapping is the process by which Multicaps looks at the default configuration settings and based upon the factors selected as most important by the user evaluates the past performance lines of each horse
in a race. After evaluating the past performance lines, Multicaps selects either one or multiple lines for each horse as representing how that horse is likely to run in todays race. The lines selected for each horse will be used to compare each horse aga
inst the others in order to rank each horse relative to the others according to numerous different factors.
It is necessary to HANDICAP after importing a file unless the automatic handicapping function is enabled in the default configuration. Even if the auto-handicap is enabled, it is also necessary to manually handicap whenever the user sel
ects different pacelines than those selected according to the default configuration. To learn more about the handicapping function and choices, see CHANGE DEFAULTS.
Selecting this option will handicap one track for a specific date.
Selecting this option will handicap all tracks for a specific date.
Selecting this option will allow the user to scroll through a list of all imported races. The information list contains the track code, the date, the race number, the race distance, the surface, and the race
class and conditions. A specific race may be selected for viewing by highlighting the race by moving the cursor keys up or down. The information box also provides asterisk or block indicators informing the user as to whether a specific file has imported r
esults, and if so whether the result models need to be computed. An asterisk indicates that the result file has been imported and has been computed. A block indicates that the results file has been imported but that models need to be computed. The absence
of an asterisk or block indicates that no results file has been imported for this specific race.
After highlighting the race, hit the ENTER key (or RETURN key on some keyboards) key on the computer keyboard in order to go to a detailed view of the race. The detailed view that appears next depends upon the default view selected in t
he DEFAULTS CONFIGURATION menu. The VIEW option takes the user away from the MAIN screen and to the next level of information. The VIEW screen gives the user the opportunity to view each horse in a specific race ranked relative to its competitors. The var
ious VIEW screens are dealt with in detail after this section on the MAIN menu.
ESC
Pressing the Escape key on the keyboard will return the user to the MAIN menu screen.
The UTILITIES option allows the user to perform various house-keeping functions with Multicaps. The sub-options of UTILITIES allow the user to modify race data, delete files, pack & rebuild databases and
choose the directory path informing Multicaps where to look for data files.
Selecting this option allows the user to modify race data. Reasons for doing this may include if errors occur in the data file or if race conditions have changed. A common occurrence is for turf races to be taken
off the turf because of rain.
Track Abbreviation allows the user to change the track code abbreviation.

8) Set Path to Multicaps Data Files
Selecting this option allows the user to change the directory path to a different location.
The QUIT option allows the user to exit properly from Multicaps. Failure to exit properly may result in damage to the databases created by Multicaps. Power failure or re-booting the machine without first exit
ing properly from Multicaps may require the user to re-import and rebuild the databases.
Selecting this option allows Multicaps to eliminate unnecessary information from its databases allowing it to run more efficiently and eliminate wasted hard disk space. It is not necessary to execute this option
if no importing or modifying of data has occurred in this session of Multicaps.
Yes
Causes Multicaps to pack the running lines and databases prior to quitting the program. If using Windows 95, typically a blank box is left on the screen with the notation "Finished" in the upper bar of the window. In order to remove
the box, click the X icon on the upper-right corner of the box to remove it from your desktop.
No
Causes Multicaps to exit without packing the running lines and databases. This method is the quickest way to exit properly.

Other hot keys include the first letter of the menu items in the top line (e.g., pressing "V" will activate the VIEW menu) as well as the first letter in the drop-down menus. The Alt-N combination will activate the race co nditions screen while viewing a specific race.
N)ext Race
Selecting this option will change the view to the next race. For example, if the current screen shows Race # 5, pressing the "N" will change the view to Race # 6.
Selecting this option will change the view to the previous race. For example, if the current screen shows Race # 5, pressing the "L" will change the view to Race # 4.
Pressing "S" will cause a box to appear with a listing of all imported races from which the user may choose to view.
Pressing "D" will remove the current race from the database. It will only reappear if the entire race card is re-imported.
H)andicap Using Current Pacelines
Choosing this option will cause Multicaps to re-handicap the race card according to the pacelines that have been manually selected by the user. Choose this option after changing pacelines to something different t
han those automatically picked according to the default configurations. The effect of handicapping is to rank the horses by the many factors by using the currently selected pacelines as guidelines. It is only necessary to manually handicap if the automati
c handicapping feature is turned off in the CHANGE menu. If the automatic handicap option is selected a race is re-handicapped after changing a paceline.
R)e-Handicap Using Current Defaults
Choosing this option will ignore any manual adjustments made to the pacelines used by Multicaps. The program will revert to the settings as listed in the default configuration settings and will re-handicap accord
ingly.
Selecting this option will toggle the "Auto Re-Handicap" feature on or off. The user may choose to temporarily turn this feature off if preparing to change the pacelines for several horses in a race.
Selecting this option will return the user to the MAIN menu.
Selecting this option will change the screen to view different factors based upon the same pacelines as the current screen. The menu is divided into those factors that have MODELS and those that do not. SCREENS WITH MODELS - The following screens have an associated model screen. The model screen will show the success rates for each of the factors on the screen. Use of the models requires the input of the Exotic Data Resul
ts (*.XRD) file for the races in your database. To learn more about MODELS see that section beginning at page *).
This screen shows the predicted BRIS pace and speed ratings ranked according to the selected pacelines.
This screen shows the predicted total pace ratings ranked according to the selected pacelines.
This screen shows the predicted times in minutes and seconds as ranked according to the selected pacelines.
This screen shows the predicted feet per second for the various calls for the selected pacelines.
This screen shows the BRIS class and speed ratings ranked according to the selected pacelines.
SCREENS WITHOUT MODELS - The following screens do not have models. In other words the databases containing the results information do not calculate the win or in-the-money (ITM) percentages and return on investment (ROI) f
or the factors in the following fields.
This screen shows a graphic view as to which horse(s) are likely to be on the lead at the various points of call in the race and how many horse lengths a horse is likely to be off the lead based upon the paceline
(s) used as a predictor. The numbers in the graph indicate horse lengths from the lead.
This screen shows the morning line odds, the Multicaps value-based odds line, trainer and jockey statistics.
This screen shows a condensed chart of the various rankings of the horses in the current race based upon the selected pacelines. The factors include: 1C - first call; 2C - second call; TT - turn time; FT - predic
ted final time; LF - last fraction; SP - sustained pace; %M - percent medium; AP - average pace; FX Factor X; LX - late energy; TP - total pace; EL - early plus late pace; ET Early Total; AC Average BRIS class (last 3); RR - BRIS Race Rating; CR - B
RIS Class Rating; ML - morning line odds; PO - Multicaps odds line.
This screen looks at all the pacelines for all horses (going back 10 races, if available) in the current race and ranks the pacelines according to the factor selected. For example, out of a 10 horse field there i
s a potential pool of 100 pacelines (assuming each horse has run at least 10 times). You will be able to scroll through the top pacelines out of this total pool. One purpose of these screens is to spot horses with multiple, recent pacelines near the top o
f the list which may indicate consistent superiority over the remainder of the field. A horse with no pacelines near the top indicates that it will need to run a better race than it has in its last 10 times back (assuming it has 10 pacelines in its histor
y). The list below is the factors that may sorted and viewed.
NOTE: The number of pacelines that will be considered is determined by the default settings. In other words, if the number of "races to go back" is set to 5, then the total maximum pool of pacelines for a 10 horse field is 50.
The highest BRIS ratings for 1st call for the current field of horses.
The highest BRIS ratings for 2nd call for the current field of horses.
The highest BRIS turn time ratings for the current field of horses. Turn time is the difference between 2nd call and 1st call. The higher the number the greater the amount of acceleration between 1st call and 2nd
call. A negative number indicates deceleration from 1st call to 2nd call. A zero indicates an even level of pace for 1st and 2nd call.
The highest BRIS final speed ratings for the current field of horses.
The highest BRIS late pace ratings for the current field of horses.

Default Sort Order
This setting determines the initial sort order whenever viewing a race. The options are as follows.
BRIS 1st Call Pace Rating represents how fast the horse ran from the start to the first call (Sprints = mile, Routes = mile, Routes over 1 5/8 mile = 1 mile)
BRIS 2nd Call Pace Rating represents how fast the horse ran from the start to the 2nd call (2nd Call for Sprints = mile. 2nd Call for races 1 mile through 1 3/16 = mile. 2nd Call for races 1 through 1 3/8 = 1 mile. 2nd Call for races 1 5/8 mile = 1 3/8 mile).
The difference between 1st Call and 2nd Call.
The time estimated as the final time. The time estimated as the final time is derived from the pace and speed figures earned for the selected paceline.
The measure of pace for the final fraction in a race.
Early Pace = the measure of pace from the start to 2nd Call.
Sustained Pace = (Early Pace + Last Fraction) divided by 2.
Percent Median = (1st Call + 2nd Call) divided by (1st Call + 2nd Call + Last Fraction) multiplied by 100.
Average Pace for Sprint races = (1st call + 2nd call + Last Fraction) divided by 3. Average Pace for Route races = (Early pace + Sustained pace) divided by 2.
Factor X = (1st call + Last Fraction) divided by 2.
Total Factors. By default, total factors includes the following list of factors: 1C - first call; 2C - second call; TT - turn time; FT - predicted final time; LF - last fraction; SP - sustained pace; %M - percent medium;
AP - average pace; FX Factor X; LX - late energy; TP - total pace; EL - early plus late pace; ET Early Total; AC Average BRIS class (last 3); RR - BRIS Race Rating; CR - BRIS Class Rating; ML - morning line odds; PO - Multicaps odds line.
Late Velocity = (2nd call + Last fraction) divided by 2.
Average BRIS Class for the last 3 races.
BRISs proprietary speed figure used to measure and rate how fast a horse ran from start to finish. BRIS speed figures are comparable across all tracks, types of races, distances, and surfaces. The number is designed to be an ob
jective number so that 100 at Belmont is comparable to 100 at Ellis Park. The higher the speed figure, the faster the horse ran.
BRISs Race Rating is a measure of the overall quality of horses which actually competed in a race. The higher the race rating number is, the tougher the competition.
BRISs Class Rating is a measure of a horses actual performance in a race. BRISs Class Rating takes into consideration the competitive level and beaten lengths of the horses that have beaten the horse you are considering and t
he ones that the horse you are considering has beaten. The higher the class rating, the better the performance.
Morning line odds.
Multicaps value odds line. Heavy emphasis on BRIS speed figure.
E=Early, P=Presser, E/P=Early/Presser, S=Sustained.
Early speed points. The range of points is from 0 8. This is a relative measure of how much the horse needs to be on the lead.
1st fraction rating
Early pace rating. EPR = 2nd call.
Final fraction rating. (Last fraction).
Total pace rating. (1st call + 2nd call + Last fraction).
Early/Late pace rating = (1st call pace + 2nd call pace + Late pace).
Early Total pace rating = (1st call pace + 2nd call pace).
Default Color Order
The options are the same as the Default Sort Order listed above. See the above list for details. The color ranking order is:
(Every horse ranked 6 and lower will be shaded gray)
Default Screen
Default screen determines the initial screen view when choosing a race. The options are as follows.
BRIS 1st Call Pace Rating represents how fast the horse ran from the start to the first call (Sprints = mile, Routes = mile, Routes over 1 5/8 mile = 1 mile).
This rating gives the difference between the 2nd call and the 1st call. Turn time indicates the relative amount of acceleration or deceleration from the 1st call to the 2nd call.
BRISs proprietary speed figure used to measure and rate how fast a horse ran from start to finish. BRIS speed figures are comparable across all tracks, types of races, distances, and surfaces. The number is designed to be an ob jective number so that 100 at Belmont is comparable to 100 at Ellis Park. The higher the speed figure, the faster the horse ran.
the measure of pace for the final fraction in a race.
BRISs Class Rating is a measure of a horses actual performance in a race. BRISs Class Rating takes into consideration the competitive level and beaten lengths of the horses that have beaten the horse you are considering and t he ones that the horse you are considering has beaten. The higher the class rating, the better the performance.
BRISs Race Rating is a measure of the overall quality of horses which actually competed in a race. The higher the race rating number is, the tougher the competition.
Overall energy = (LX + 1st Call) divided by 2.
Late Velocity = (2nd call + Last fraction) divided by 2.
1st fraction rating
Early pace rating. EPR = 2nd call.
Final fraction rating. (Last fraction).
Total pace rating. (1st call + 2nd call + Last fraction).
Early/Late pace rating = (1st call pace + 2nd call pace + Late pace).
Early Total pace rating = (1st call pace + 2nd call pace).
Best Race
This option represents the default configuration setting which determines which paceline to use for auto handicapping.
Selecting this option will cause Multicaps to choose the line that has the best rating for the factor chosen as the paceline factor. Multicaps will go back in the past performance history as determined in the configuration setti
ng which determines the number of races to go back (up to 10 past performance lines).
Selecting this option will cause Multicaps to choose the line that has the 2nd best rating for the factor chosen as the paceline factor. Multicaps will go back in the past performance history as determined in the configuration s
etting which determines the number of races to go back (up to 10 past performance lines).
Selecting this option will cause Multicaps to choose the line that has the 3rd best rating for the factor chosen as the paceline factor. Multicaps will go back in the past performance history as determined in the configuration s
etting which determines the number of races to go back (up to 10 past performance lines).
Races to Go Back
This configuration setting determines the number of races to go back in a horses past performance history (from most recent to 10 races back) in determining which paceline to use in ranking the field of horses. Using t
he automatic handicapping function, Multicaps will go back the number of races as selected here, look at the paceline factor (as selected above) and choose either the best, 2nd best or 3rd best paceline (as selected above) based upon that preferred factor
.
Include Off Tracks
include off track conditions such as sloppy, muddy, etc.
Include All Tracks
include tracks other than the current track.
Automatic Method
choose the type of pacelines automatically selected by the auto-handicapping functions. The user has the option of single pacelines, or averaging multiple pacelines.
1) Dist & Surface same exact distance and surface.
2) Surface Only - same surface only.
3) Use All PPL - all past performance lines.
average 2 - 3 races.
Multiple # of Races
If using multiple pacelines, choose the number to average.
same options as All Races In Database (listed above)
same options as All Races In Database (listed above)
THESE ITEMS WILL NOT RE-COMPUTE MODELS - choosing these options will not re-compute models databases.

choose system settings including:
Y = After changing a horses paceline, ReHandicap the Race
N = After changing a horses paceline, Do not re-handicap the race.
Y = Handicap the races when you are importing your data files.
N = Do not handicap races when you are importing your data files.
This option allows the user to enter the maximum number of races that will be added to the models database for each category of models. The range is from 1 to 999. There is a large number of separate categories of models potenti
ally available, depending upon the variety of race types run at your tracks. For example, an 8.5 furlong race at Churchill Downs could potentially have a models database for maiden claiming $5,000 (dirt), maiden claiming $10,000 (dirt), maiden special wei
ght (dirt), allowance $50,000 (dirt), stakes $100,000 (dirt), etc., plus an additional models database for each race type on the turf.
This option allows the user to save the options selected or use the escape key to leave the changes unaffected.
Y - Yes
N - No
ESC - Escape key to cancel changes.
E)nter\Edit Results
This option allows the user to enter or edit results of races including adding or modifying payoff amounts.
L)Change Class Level
Allows the user to place a race in a sub-category for the purpose of refining the models building process. By default Multicaps will place all claiming races at the same track, same surface, and same distance in the sam
e results model. The user can further refine this process by sub-categorizing claiming and manually placing a range of claiming value in its own model. For example, $1,000 to $10,000 claimers could be placed in its own model. Another possible use of this
function is to put off-track condition races in their own models classification. For example, one could place all muddy claiming races in their own models classification. It is important to remember that by default the races will be placed into the generi
c claiming model. If the user wants to make sub-categories then each race to be put into the sub-category must be done manually. Also, once a race is taken out of the generic default category it will only appear as part of the model for the sub-category.<
/P>
T) Set Total Factors
Allows the user to create a "power number" by choosing combinations of factors to key in on. For example, the user can set class rating and speed as their total factor number. Multicaps will then calculate a number base
upon the rankings of each horse on the card and rank them accordingly. By default, Multicaps will base its calculation upon the following factors: 1st Call, 2nd Call, Turn Time, BRIS Speed, Last Fraction, Sustained Pace, Percent Med
ium, Average Pace, Factor X, Late Energy, Total Pace Rating, Early\Late, Early Total, BRIS Average Class, Race Rating, Class Rating, Morning Line, Multicaps Line.
M)anually Adjust Horses Predicted Time
Allows the user to manually adjust a horses predicted running time.
S)cratch a Horse
Allows the user to scratch horses from the race. Scratching a horse will cause the race to be re-handicapped. A horse that is scratched cannot be re-added without re-importing the whole race card. See the Non-Contender
option below.
D)elete A Horse (Non Contender)
Allows the user to denote a horse as a non-contender. The effect is to remove that horses information from the view screens. A non-contender may be re-added by the option below.
A)dd A Horse
Allows the user to add a horse that has been previously designated as a non-contender.
The information screens list general information about factors in a race that do not directly relate to the past performance lines in a horses history although the factors are likely to have an effect on the out
come of todays races.
J)ockey
The jockey screen shows statistical information regarding their win, place and show percentages.
T)rainer
The Trainer screen shows statistical information regarding their win, place and show percentages.
F)irst Time Starters
The first time starters screen lists each horse that has no previously recorded starts. The sub-option allows the user to view in a convenient format the program number, morning line odds, trainer and jockey statistics
as well as recorded workouts. It is important for the user to make appropriate use of the information contained in this screen because Multicaps does not handicap these horses. The handicapping process of Multicaps relies upon the past history as found in
a horses specific paceline to predict how that horse is likely to run today. Because first time starters by definition do not possess a past history it is not possible for Multicaps to handicap them.
H)orse Information
The horse information screen places in a convenient format the program number, horses name, jockey, trainer, horses age, equipment and medication scheduled to be used in the current race.
B)reeding
The breeding screen lists the program number, horses name, first-time starter (if applicable), morning line odds, as well as the names of each horses sire and dam.
R)aceDefaults (View Only)
This option lists the configuration default settings being used to handicap the current race. It is not possible to change settings from this screen. In order to make changes to configuration settings choose the CHANGE
menu and CONFIGURE DEFAULTS sub-option. The following configuration settings are shown in this screen.
the factor that determines the order by which horses are ranked when initially viewing a screen.
the factor which determines the color ranking order through the various screens. The color of a horse will remain on that horse throughout all of the various screens regardless of the current top-to-bottom sort being viewed. The
power of this option is to keep the user focused on a particular factor that is deemed to be dominant.
this is the initial screen that comes up when a new race is viewed.
this option is the factor most important to the user in determining the success of the auto-handicapping features of Multicaps. This factor determines what the auto-handicapping features of Multicap will look to when auto-select
ing pacelines. For example, if the BRIS class rating is deemed to be the most predictive of the outcome of races, then choosing that option here will cause Multicaps to look at that factor when selecting a horses pacelines. Restrictions as to how far to
go back and whether to select the best, 2nd best, or 3rd best pacelines in that group will further refine the auto-handicapping features.
the best race indicates which race to use (best, 2nd best or 3rd best) when auto-selecting pacelines according to the paceline factor selected above. Multicaps will choose either the best, 2nd best or 3rd best going as far as 10
races back.
this option determines how many races to go back in determining which paceline(s) to use in predicting the horses performance in the current race.
determines whether to include or exclude off-tracks when auto-selecting pacelines.
determines whether to include all tracks when auto-selecting pacelines. Choosing "No" here will restrict Multicaps to use only pacelines at the same track as the current race.
This option determines whether to use single or multiple pacelines, and whether to restrict Multicaps to the same distance or surface as the current race.
This selection determines the factors to use when using multiple pacelines. If using multiple pacelines, Multicaps will average the pacelines selected.
L)ist All Horses
This screen lists all horses in the current race in a format that can be scrolled up and down. The information contained includes morning line odds, jockey and trainer statistics, recent recorded workouts, age, medicati
on, and earnings.
C)onditions for Race
This screen lists the conditions for entry of horses into the current race. Race condition information includes: the class designation such as claiming, maiden claiming, maiden special weight, allowance, handicap or sta
kes race; the claiming and purse values; prior success conditions; weight requirements; as well as age and gender limitations.
This menu option allows the user to set the printout options for the various screens. Note: if using a laser printer and having problems printing while running Multicaps through Windows, try running Multic
aps from DOS mode. This may require exiting from Windows and selecting the DOS mode on reboot.
P)rint Current Screen
This option will print only the current screen.
E)ject Printer Page
This option will eject the page from your printer. This option acts similar to the form feed option on most printers. It may be necessary to use this option in order to force your laser printer to eject the page after e
xecuting the other print commands.
R)ace (Print 1 Race)
Selecting this option will print all the screens that have been setup in the PRINTOUT DEFAULTS for the current race.
C)ard (Print 1 Track)
Selecting this option will print all the screens that have been setup in the PRINTOUT DEFAULTS for the current card.
D)ay (Print All Tracks)
Selecting this option will print all tracks for the same day as the currently viewed race. The screens to be printed are those setup to be printed in the PRINTOUT DEFAULTS menu.
S)et Printout Defaults
This menu allows the user to determine which screens to print when selecting the print options listed above. The following screens are available for printing. The user may select any combination of the below-listed scre
ens for printing.

ent race and its rank for the factor at the top of the column.
Win Model
Choosing this model shows the win percentages for the factors from the active race view. The top half of this screen shows the ranking for each horse in the current race for the factor at the top of each column. The bot
tom half of the screen shows the winning percentages as well as the $1 return on investment (ROI) for consistently selecting each factor as a betting proposition. "Top 1" refers to the winning percentages for the top ranked horse for that particular facto
r. The value listed in the $1 ROI represents the dollar amount earned or lost by consistently betting $1 on that factor in all of the races in the models database. "Top 2" refers to the top 2 ranked horses. "Top 3" refers to the top 3 ranked horses.
Exacta Model
Choosing this model shows the winning percentages and ROI for the factors from the active race view. "Box Top 2" refers to the impact of boxing the two highest ranked horses in an exacta proposition. "Box Top 3" shows t
he impact of boxing the three highest ranked horses. "Box Top 4" shows the impact of boxing the four highest ranked horses.
Quinella Model
Choosing this model shows the winning percentages and ROI for the factors from the active race view for quinella propositions. "Key 1\234" refers to the impact of keying the highest ranked horse with the 2nd, 3rd and 4t
h ranked horses. "Key 2\345" refers to the impact of keying the 2nd highest ranked horse with the 3rd, 4th and 5th ranked horses. "Key 3\456" refers to the impact of keying the 3rd highest ranked horse with the 4th, 5th and 6th highest ranked horses.

Compute \ Update Models
Selecting this option will cause Multicaps to re-compute its model databases. In order to use this option it is assumed that the Exotic Results Data (*.XRD) files have been downloaded into the data directory assigned fo
r Multicaps.
Track Code
Selecting this option will compute models one track at a time. For example, if wanting to compute models only for Gulfstream enter the track code (GPX). To calculate more than one track enter additional track codes on t
he blank fields. To activate the calculating process hit ENTER key on a blank entry.
Selecting this option will compute models for only the tracks set in the users track list.
Selecting this option will compute models for all results files that you have in your Multicaps data directory.
Delete Race From Models
This option allows the user to delete races from the models database. The user may want to delete anomalous race results or a series of results that may have resulted from conditions that no longer exist.
Set Track List
This menu allows the user to create a list of tracks for the compute models LST option. Models can be computed individually (by track code: e.g., CDX = Churchill Downs), ALL (which will compute all models in your databa
se), or LST. LST is a short-cut list to make it quicker to compute if you want to compute more than one track but do not want to compute all models in the database. For example, if you maintain a database for all the tracks in the Kentucky circuit, the Fl
orida circuit, the Ohio circuit, the New York circuit and the Southern California circuit but only want to compute the tracks currently running you can setup such a list.
TICKET MANAGER
The ticket manager allows the user to create their own straight, wheel, key, or box tickets. Ticket options include Win, Exacta, Quinella, and Trifecta. For example a trifecta ticket may be created in which the top thre
e ranked horses are wheeled in the win position, the top four ranked horses are wheeled in the place position and the top five ranked horses in the show position. The Ticket Manager will calculate the ticket cost and will calculate the ROI (return on inve
stment) and win percentages of consistently betting that proposition.
Highlight the Ticket Manager option and hit the ENTER key. There are 4 ticket options:
Choose MODELS while viewing a race. Choose TICKET MANAGER by highlighting and pressing the ENTER key. Highlight TRIFECTA and hit the ENTER key. On the next screen highlight the option to "Create New Trifecta Ticket" and hit the ENTER key. In the field "Edit Tickets Description" give the ticket a name (e.g., Sample1), hit the ENTER key and the cursur will move to the WIN position of the first ticket. Enter the rank of the horses to be included in the WIN position (e.g., 123 will include the top 3 ranked horses in the WIN position). Hit the ENTER key and the cursor will move to the PLACE position. Type the numbers for the rank of horses to be included in the PLACE position (e.g., 1234 will include the top 4 ranked horses in the PL ACE position of the wheeled trifecta ticket). Hit the ENTER key and the cursor will move to the SHOW position for the trifecta ticket. Type the numbers for the rank of horses to be included in the SHOW position (e.g., 12345 will include the top 5 ranked h orses in the SHOW position of the wheeled trifecta ticket).
Hit the ENTER key and the cursor will move to the next trifecta ticket. Repeat the process described above to create two more different tickets (e.g., 123, 123, 123 will create a box trifecta ticket covering the top 3 ranked horses). Af ter entering the information in the last field Multicaps will calculate the cost of each ticket. To save the ticket hit the ENTER key again and the screen will switch to the "Select Trifecta Ticket" screen.
Using the cursor (arrow) keys, highlight the ticket to be activated and hit the ENTER key. An option box will pop-up in which the highlighted ticket can be activated. Highlight the text "Activate the current trifecta ticket" and a check mark will be placed next to the activated ticket. Hit the ESCAPE key and the screen will go back to the "Ticket Menu." At this point, the user may choose another ticket type (WIN, EXACTA or QUINELLA) to create or edit or hit the ESCAPE key to leave the t icket manager. The "Recompute Models" screen will appear with the option to recompute or escape without recomputing. Responding "NO" at this point will leave the models as they were prior to entering the Ticket Manager. Responding "YES" will recompute the models with the activated ticket options. The user will then be able to see the win percentage and ROI (return on investment) of consistently betting on the propostions created with the new tickets. After highlighting "YES" and hitting the ENTER key the user will be taken to the next screen which allows the user to choose whether to recalculate "ALL" models, specific track(s) or the pre-defined "LIST" of tracks.
After recalculating the models, go to MODELS and choose the ticket (e.g., trifecta, exacta, etc.) to be viewed. The models screen will show the win percentage and ROI of consistently betting the new ticket.
