Belmont Park celebrates its 100th birthday this
year, and the Breeders' Cup World
Thoroughbred Championships is the highlight of
this prestigious fall meet. For handicappers the
question is "what role will Belmont Park play in the
outcome of the eight races?" By tapping into the
Brisnet.com database and researching the appropriate
distances/surfaces, we've tried to answer just that
question.
Juvenile Races: In the 42 juvenile races run
at 8.5 furlongs since 1997, the majority of the
winners broke from the inside posts of one through
three, with the rail post (one hole) alone
accounting for 23.8% winners. The preferred running
styles were Early/Pressers (E/P) and Pressers (P).
Put a high premium on tactical speed. Three-quarters
of the winners were within two lengths of the early
lead at the first call (half mile). Only 7% of the
winners closed from farther back than five lengths.
Distaff: E and E/P types dominated the 60
one-turn nine furlong races for fillies and mares.
This accounted for over 80% of the winners.
Wire-to-wire frontrunners accounted for 31.7% of the
winners.
Distaffers tended to favor inside posts,
specifically the two and three posts. Despite the
one-turn distance, fillies and mares breaking from
outside posts performed very poorly.
Mile: It's not impossible to win from an
outside post, but inside and middle draws are
preferred. Give the slight edge to your contenders
who draw posts two through seven.
Early/Pressers and Sustained types have fared well
in 8f turf stakes. However, even the closers have to
be able to make their moves early. At the second
call (six furlongs) 91% were within three lengths of
the lead.
Sprint: In the 68 stakes at 6f, closers fared
much better than expected. Although early speed
still wins the majority of the races, Sustained
types (S) won their fair share of races. Only 26.5%
of these stakes were taken wire-to-wire.
Outside posts (8 and beyond) performed under par
with an impact value of 0.56.
Turf Marathons: Belmont is one of the few
tracks where there is a plethora of 10-furlong inner
turf events. Of the 278 total races, 17% were taken
wire-to-wire. Early types have fared well but the
preferred runstyle is a Presser (P), or midpack
horse. Outside posts actually have the preferred
draw. Inside posts, for whatever reason, have
disappointed.
There have been 21 turf races at 1 1/2 miles, and
19% were won wire-to-wire. Pressers and closers
still dominated, accounting for 62% of the winners,
in aggregate. Outside posts have performed
miserably, while 19% of the winners have broken from
the rail.
Classic: The one post has produced 23.3%
winners from the 43 races run for older horses at 1
1/4 miles since 1997. Demand a better price on an
outside draw as it's difficult to win.
Early types have dominated at this distance. Twenty
one of the 43 winners were within one length of the
early lead at the first call!
