The Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita opens on September 24th and will host its fourth Breeders' Cup World Championships on Friday, October 24th and Saturday October 25th. In addition, the beautiful Arcadia track has been selected as the site for the 2009 Championships - the first time in history that one location will host the event two years running. The most important consideration to handicappers at the start of this meet will be as to how the new Pro-Ride will play. The surface, to be used for racing for the first time in America, is claimed by it's manufacturers to be the most consistent artificial surface available and that it creates minimal kickback. In general artificial surfaces have created fairer, less speed-favoring strips and, while Pro-Ride has been used with good reviews at various training facilities in this country, handicappers will have to analyze the first few races before forming any opinions as to any existing biases. With racing being conducted exclusively over artificial surfaces for over a year in Southern California enough statistics have been accumulated to form conclusions as to which sire lines are benefiting by the change. In addition to obvious, proven synthetic sires such as A.P. Indy, Pleasant Tap, Street Cry (Ire) and Giants Causeway, some California-based sires whose offspring deserve extra consideration include:
The Santa Anita turf course, however, is well established and documented. The unique six and a half furlong 'Downhill' turf course is one of a kind in America having a right hand turn shortly after the start. This gives runners, especially ones with early speed, that are drawn to the outside an advantage. Nearly a quarter of all races over the 6 1/2 furlong trip are won in wire-to wire fashion but very few will come from low post positions. The one mile conventional turf course favors closers coming from middle to inside posts that can enjoy a good trip. As well as taking into account the post position and pace variables, another key to success handicapping races on the six and a half furlong downhill turf course is to find horses that have already proved that they can act on this course. Horses that have already won at least twice on the downhill turf, and may show up at this meet, are listed below with their trainers and lifetime record at the distance:
The Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita will feature six grade 1 events to be run on September 27th in addition to hosting racing's biggest day of the year on closing weekend.
