M.Janeway finished 2nd in the World Cup of Thoroughbred Handicapping Tournament in Las Vegas. Here's what he had to say:

"I want to thank you for the MULTICAPS program which I have been using for several months. I have found it very useful in spotting winners overlooked by the majority of handicappers and players. Thanks to your software and datafiles, I was fortunate to finish second place overall in the Mutuel Division of the 33rd edition of the World Cup of Thoroughbred Handicapping Tournament, held August 6th through 9th, presented by Mike Levine, President and held at the Palace Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. My winnings for second place was \$11,000. The first place prize was 25,000, which I barely missed with two betting slips left...."

Sincerely, M. Janeway

Wizard's Breeders' Cup Scouting Reports

Return for '97 Better Than Ever

The countdown to Breeders' Cup XIV has begun, and BRIS customers will once again have exclusive access to the Wizard's Breeders' Cup Reports. These incredibly detailed reports combine a comprehensive analysis of the key Breeders' Cup preps, along with the Wizard's insights into the significance of each race and its impact on November 8 at Hollywood Park.

Beginning Friday, October 10, the first of five 1997 editions of the Wizard's Breeders' Cup Scouting Report will be online by late afternoon. Then, every Friday thereafter leading up to the Cup, each report will focus on the major contenders and their most immediate prep races.

The Wizard has adopted a new perspective for 1997, and handicappers will find the format more valuable than ever. Every major Breeders' Cup prep race, both domestic and foreign, will be analyzed in depth.

Track conditions, bias reports, pace profiles, the physical condition of each runner, and how the race set up for the winners as well as the losers will be presented in the Wizard's breezy, informed style.

"I decided to adopt a new approach this year," said Michael J. Kipness, a.k.a. The Wizard.

"Rather than write about hundreds of horses, many of whom may never reach the starting gate on November 8, I have taken reader feedback into account and will focus on every key prep race that might influence the Breeders' Cup," Kipness explained.

BRIS Speed Ratings will be presented on a horse-by-horse basis for each domestic race. This new feature offers readers a chance to review these critical numbers days, even weeks, before they are available to the public in past performances for November 8.

Calibrated to compare foreign and domestic races, BRIS' exclusive Class Ratings are also a feature of the Wizard's Scouting Reports for prep races run in England, Ireland, and France. With these reports, American racing fans will have a better chance that ever to size up the overseas challenge for 1997.

So if you think a chart footnote is detailed, you will not believe the lengths to which the Wizard has gone in order to present readers with a look beneath the surface of each Breeders' Cup prep race.

But as the name implies, most stakes leading up to racing's richest day are just that preps. The real running will be on November 8, when millions of dollars and Eclipse Awards are on the line. With the help of the Wizard's Scouting Reports, readers will know which entrants are primed for top efforts, and which horses may already be past their peak on Breeders' Cup Day.

In addition to helping pick the winners at Hollywood Park, the Wizard's Breeders' Cup Reports will provide a guide to the remaining big races of this year, and even into the Spring of 1998. Since each report analyzes significant races leading up to November 8, handicappers will be well served to save them in a binder for future reference.

The final Scouting Report, available on Friday, November 7, also takes a new direction in 1997. The Wizard's special wrap-up Breeders' Cup Scouting Report will offer a last-minute analysis of workouts, weather, and the latest track bias information for Hollywood Park on the eve of the big day.

Although the prep races will have already been run, there will be no more timely analysis available of the latest trends that may impact the Breeders' Cup results on Saturday.

Priced at \$8 each, all five of the Wizard's Breeders' Cup Reports will available online to Handicapper's Database users, and on the Internet to BRISnet clients.

The Wizard's 1997 Breeders' Cup Selections will once again be posted on Wednesday, November 5. Stay up-to-date with BRIS and be prepared for one of the most open Breeders' Cup series in years.

The Late Pace Advantage

By: Richard J. Nilsen

One of the best plays in racing is to exploit a horse who holds a significant advantage of one means or another over the entire field. Sometimes, it is a runner with an early pace advantage. Other times, it is a horse who is the class of the race. Today, we'll look at the runner with the late pace advantage.

In the seventh race at Hoosier Park on September 16, LORIE'S WARRIOR was the lone Sustained closer in a field of six \$10,000 claimers. His average BRIS Late Pace Rating at the distance/surface was 89, and the next closest rival entered the race with a 78 average.

A quick and easy way to spot horses with such an advantage is to use the Track Bias and Race Summary report from BRIS, which is available as part of SuperStats, the Pacegraph and the Ultimate PPs. Under the Race Summary, horses are ranked based on their final speed ratings at the distance/surface category -- races on a fast or good surface within one furlong of today's race. Here, averages are given for each horse for early pace, late pace and speed.

Below the Race Summary, horses are also ranked based on their Current Class Ratings, arguably the most predictive number on the sheet. Check out the field from the race at Hoosier, along with each runner's running style (RS), late pace average (LP), speed rating (Spd) and Current Class rating:

HorseRSLPSpdClass

Scorpio OneP7873109.4
GallapiatsmisP7265107.8
Nanner PuddinP6162108.3

As one could see from the rankings, Lorie's Warrior held a huge advantage based on his closing kick. In a race void of much early speed, it is always wise to look for the horse who can finish fastest of all. This horse was a good selection based on his 11 point edge on Late Pace, but the choice was confirmed by his top ranking in both speed and class. It is advisable when uncovering a horse with a pace advantage to see if he is competitive on either speed or class. In this case, Lorie's Warrior had it all. Despite all these advantages and a low morning line of only 2-1, the Kentucky invader was let off 4.10-1 by the Indiana crowd. Closing from last, Lorie's Warrior joined Scorpio One at the top of the stretch and drew off by two lengths to pay \$10.20. The latter held on to complete a generous \$55.60 exacta.

The Daily Racing Form chart read, "Lorie's Warrior, far back outside early, started his rally on the second turn, was sent four wide into the stretch, then gained the ADVANTAGE past the eighth pole. Scorpio One, void of early foot inside, commenced his after a half, led briefly in midstretch but was OUTFINISHED."

Are all races this easy? Clearly not. However, handicappers should always be on the lookout for a runner with an early or late pace advantage who is a contender based on speed or class. Concentrating on such runners should result in cashing more tickets by selecting a higher percentage of winners.
