Baird becomes first to reach 9,000
Thoroughbred racing’s leading trainer by wins, Dale Baird,
added another milestone to his incredible career when capturing
his 9,000th race on Friday night at Mountaineer Park. The 69-year-old
conditioner saddled Frazee’s Folly (Beau Genius) to a one-length
victory in the 8TH race, a $7,500 claiming event.
It fittingly came in a claiming event. Between 1971 and 1999,
Baird led the nation by wins 15 times and dominated with mostly
claimers at Mountaineer Park, winning the training title there
for 20 consecutive years.
Baird became the first trainer to record 8,000 wins in 1999.
