Jerry Crawford, Matt Gannon and Charlie Grask’s HALORY LEIGH
(Halory Hunter) ran down the 6-5 favorite Lady Tak (Mutakddim)
Saturday in the one-mile $230,400 Churchill
Downs Distaff H. (G2)
to add another mark in the win column for trainer Dale Romans.

Craig Perret started the four-year-old filly near the back of
the pack and steadily moved up the field. Lady Tak and
Revolutionary Act (Boston Harbor) battled for the lead through
the first two opening fractions of :22 3/5 and :45 3/5 over the
fast track. Lady Tak continued to lead through the next two
checkpoints in 1:10 2/5 and 1:22 3/5. As the group closed for
home, though, Halory Leigh drove forward on the outside to pass
Lady Tak and stop the clock in 1:35.

Halory Leigh left the gate at 14-1 to pay a nice $31.20, $8.80
and $7. Lady Tak crossed the line five lengths back to give $3.20
and $3, rounding out the $115.80 exacta. Susan’s Angel (Cape
Town) finished three parts of a length farther back to bring up
third, returning $8.40 and a $1,192.80 trifecta at 18-1. My
Boston Gal (Boston Harbor) placed just off the board, but helped
add to the 11-3-1-2 superfecta ($1), which paid $5,657.

Island Sand (Tabasco Cat), Mayo on the Side (French Deputy),
My Trusty Cat (Tale of the Cat), There Runs Hattie (Rahy),
Wildwood Royal (Royal Academy), Miss Fortunate (Deputy Minister),
La Reason (Labeeb [GB]) and Revolutionary Act brought up the
remainder of the field.

This win, her second at the stakes level, improves the
chestnut’s record to 20-6-3-2 with increased earnings of
$411,248. She also owns three black-type placings, including the
Locust Grove H. (G3) and Shirley Jones H. (G3).

Halory Leigh was bred in Kentucky by Al Profitt and Larry
Demeritte, and is out of the winning Graceful Leigh (Clever
Trick), making her a half-sister to an unraced two-year-old colt
named Invincible Sun (Carolina Kid) and a yearling filly named
Her Lady Grace (Lord Carson).
