Dreadnaught takes Red Smith in close
finish
Trillium Stable’s DREADNAUGHT (Lac Ouimet) rallied to catch
Certifiably Crazy (Fit to Fight) and in the end found the
winner’s circle in the $150,000 Red Smith H. (G2) at Aqueduct
Saturday. The 1 3/8-mile turf race was delayed when the Tom Voss
charge threw jockey Jean-Luc Samyn after loading in the gate.
Upon inspection, the four-year-old appeared unhurt and was
allowed to race.
Certifiably Crazy broke on top and led the pack for a majority
of the race in splits of :26, :51 4/5, 1:17 4/5 and 1:43 1/5 with
Navesink River (Unbridled) trailing closely behind. Dreadnaught
sat near the middle of the group until they entered the stretch,
when he took the lead after traveling five wide around the turn, but
Certifiably Crazy battled back. They dueled over the remaining
ground, with Dreadnaught getting up by a nose in the photo,
stopping the clock over the good course in 2:18 4/5.
Dreadnaught paid $13.20, $6.70 and $4.40 for his winning
effort at 5-1. Certifiably Crazy left the gate at 8-1 and
returned $9.60 and $7.10, rounding out the $84.50 exacta. Alost (Fr)
(Highest Honor [Fr]) came up to take third with odds of 22-1 in
his U.S. bow and gave back $10.60 while finishing the nice $1,474
trifecta (4-3-8).
Irish Colonial (Colonial Affair), Navesink River, Dr. Brendler
(Distant View), Second Performance (Theatrical [Ire]), Evening
Attire (Black Tie Affair [Ire]), Rochester (Green Dancer) and
Quiet Ruler (Woodman) rounded out the order of finish. Sailaway (Our
Emblem), Kissin Saint (Kissin Kris) and Zakocity (Precocity) were
all scratched from the race.
This is Dreadnaught’s fourth career score and first stakes
victory. A former jumper, the gelding now holds a record of 14-4-4-0
with earnings of $185,523.
Dreadnaught was bred in Kentucky by David Pennington and is
out of the winning Wings of Dreams (Sovereign Dancer). He has an
unnamed yearling half-sister by Mutakddim.
