One of America’s prominent sires, CARSON CITY (Mr. Prospector), died December
24 at Overbrook Farm near Lexington, Kentucky. The reasons for the death are
unknown at this point and officials at the farm will know more after an autopsy
is performed on the 17-year-old.
In eleven crops, Carson City sired 481 winners from 606 starters, 72 of
which were stakes winners. His progeny have banked just over $50 million in
earnings. His most notable descendants include champion older mare in Canada,
Small Promises; Hopeful S. (G1) winner City Zip; Futurity S. (G1) victor
Cuvee; Ballerina H. (G1) winner Pearl City; and Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-G1)
conqueror State City.
The chestnut raced under the silks of Overbrook in his two years of racing in
1989 and 1990. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Carson City had victories in the
Sapling S. (G2) as a two-year-old, and then the Fall Highweight H. (G2) and the Boojum H.
(G3) in his sophomore season. Over the course of his racing career, he earned a mark of 15-6-2-0 with
earnings of $306,240.
Carson City stood at Overbrook since his retirement to stud in 1991. In 2005,
he was listed to stand for $35,000.
