WINNING WITH WORKOUTS
DECEMBER 9
In this regular weekly feature, Handicapper’s Report will present examples of
how to use workouts in your handicapping using actual results with horses
featured in our reports. To access the HR reports and to see the highlights of

Today’s Topic: Getting real value with shippers from other tracks that the
public ignores for “home town” favorites.
On both coasts (and in between), we tend to favor our own stalwarts when it
comes to the big races. Often horses from the west are overlaid when venturing
east for the Triple Crown. Shippers from other tracks tend to be overlaid at the
Breeders’ Cup. Then there are the “other” stakes races that trainers find worth
shipping to because they feel their horses fit for nice purses.
An excellent example was the Shug McGaughey/Ogden Phipps shipper GOOD REWARD
(Storm Cat), who had been competitive against the likes of Breeders’ Cup Mile
(G1) favorite Artie Schiller (El Prado [Ire]) and recently won a $100,000 stakes
like an improving horse should. Shug shipped him west for the Hollywood Derby
(G1) with a series of nice workouts that were noted by our New York clocker,
including three recent Grade B+ workouts. The last of the B+ drills really
“impressed.” Good Reward shouldn’t have gone off the favorite, but he was a
serious overlay at 16-1 and paid $34.20 to win with Jerry Bailey up.
From the Daily Clocker’s Report:
GOOD REWARD | BEL 11/22/04 B+ GD
101.1 B |
Looked good all the way,
fractions of 24/4, 36/4, 101, and wore blinkers. Finished up very well, with mild urging only, impressed. |
