Seven horses will contest Saturday’s $150,000 San Pasqual H. (G2) at
Santa Anita, including the likes of Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) hero TOTAL IMPACT
(Chi) (Stuka). We’ll try to beat him, however, with Goodwood Breeders’ Cup H.
(G2) winner LUNDY’S LIABILITY (Brz) (Candy Stripes), who enters off an
off-the-board placing in the Clark H. (G2) but defeated Total Impact in the
Goodwood before that. The five-year-old is
making only his eighth lifetime start here, his third in the United States, and is trained by Bobby Frankel.
He enters the 1 1/16-mile contest with a record of 7-4-1-0 and the U.A.E. Derby
(UAE-G2) winner is eligible to keep improving this season. The bay will have
David Flores in the irons, and we
can’t bet against the classy horse.

Total Impact returns to the states after a fourth-place effort in the Japan
Cup Dirt (Jpn-G1). The seven-year-old owns century-topping BRIS Speed figures
from nearly every start and is a worthy adversary here. The
Laura de Seroux trainee has missed the board only three times this year and we
will definitely use the chestnut in the exotics.

If CONGRATS (A.P. Indy) can return to his Spring 2004 form, in which he won
two in a row in Kentucky, including the Alysheba S.
at Churchill, both run at the San Pasqual distance, the five-year-old could
surprise here. This will be the bay’s second start for new trainer Richard
Mandella, and we’ll use him in the gimmicks. Tyler Baze has the mount.

FORMAL ATTIRE (Formal Gold) will make his second start both off the layoff
and for conditioner Patrick Biancone in the San Pasqual, and he may enjoy the
added distance after winning at seven furlongs last time. The gray has recorded
higher Speed figures when going short, but we can’t overlook the five-year-old
for the exotics.

EXCESSIVEPLEASURE (In Excess [Ire]) steps back up to the graded level and we’ll
watch to see how the gelding fares. HABANEROS (Tabasco Cat) may enjoy the
switch back to dirt, but we’ll let him beat us. SIGFRETO (Spunky Rascal) switches
back as well and steps up in addition. We’ll watch for now.
