Greater Good headed for Southwest
Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2) winner GREATER GOOD (Intidab) worked six
furlongs under jockey John McKee in a bullet 1:13 1/5 on Oaklawn Park’s fast dirt Saturday. The Bob
Holthus-trained sophomore is expected to make his 2005 bow in the Southwest S.
next Saturday.
“He worked well and finished good,” Holthus said. “The jock didn’t carry a
stick and never really asked him.”
Greater Good set splits of :24 1/5, :36 4/5, :49 2/5 and 1:01 before
galloping out seven furlongs in 1:26 2/5. The bay colt scored in the Kentucky
Jockey Club as well as the Kentucky Cup Juvenile S. (G3) last season and also
owns a placing in the Iroquois S. (G3). He’ll try to emulate champion Smarty
Jones, who used the mile Southwest S. as a springboard to Kentucky Derby (G1)
success.
“A mile may be a tad short for Greater Good, but I wouldn’t be surprised if
he catches them,” Holthus said. “He’s a nice colt. A lot depends on who’s in
there.”
Greater Good will have to face, among others, the undefeated MUNIFICENCE
(Allen’s Prospect) in the Southwest. The James Hudson-trained dark bay colt has
scored in all three of his career starts so far, including a 8 3/4-length
victory in the Triple Sec S. last out. Munificence worked five furlongs in 1:00
under Calvin Borel, who has the call in the Southwest.
