Llers Corporation’s MISS LOREN (Arg) (Numerous) was not to be outdone by her
full brother Mr. Light winning Saturday’s Appleton H. (G3) at Gulfstream. The
seven-year-old mare rated in midpack for the opening six furlongs of Sunday’s
Santa Maria H. (G1) at Santa Anita, swung wide approaching the turn, and valiantly fought off a stubborn
Good Student (Arg) (Louis Quatorze) to win by a nose. The final time for 1
1/16 miles on the wet-fast track was 1:42 2/5, and Miss Loren gave back $12.40, $7 and $4.40
at 5-1 for trainer Luis Seglin and jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. This was Seglin’s
first Grade 1 victory in the United States.
Good Student, always prominent, took the lead in the stretch and was there
until the very last jump, falling just short. The 15-1 shot paid $12 and $6
while completing the $76.60 exacta ($1). Hollywood Story (Wild Rush) put in a
good bid late in tight quarters, settling for third at 3-1. Show was worth
$3.40, while the trifecta came back $391.40 ($1). Personal Legend (Awesome
Again) came very wide entering the stretch and closed admirably to be fourth,
sitting on the bottom of the $1,923.30 superfecta ($1) at 9-2.
Musical Chimes (In Excess [Ire]) was next and followed by Festival (Jpn) (Assatis), pacesetter Born To Dance (Service Stripe) and Star Parade (Arg) (Parade
Marshal). Petionville Indeed (Petionville) and Stormica (Storm Cat) were
scratched.
Miss Loren adds to an already impressive resume in earning her first Grade 1
score in the U. S. The lass has a career line of 45-13-10-7 with a bankroll of
$616,260. The dark bay was a two-time Group 1 heroine in her native Argentina,
and has amassed 10 group/graded wins in her lifetime, including the Clement L.
Hirsch H. (G2) last August.
Bred in Argenitna by Firmamento, the winner was produced from Luminare (Forlitano
[Arg]).
