SUMMERLY (Summer Squall) makes her second start of the season in Saturday’s
$150,000 Silverbulletday S. (G3) at Fair Grounds and the chestnut miss looks
poised to add yet another win to her record. Trained by Steven Asmussen, the
sophomore lass had to be steadied in her career debut at Saratoga and never
recovered, finishing eighth. She returned at Keeneland and proved her prior race
was a fluke by easily capturing her maiden by 14 lengths under a hand ride.
Summerly took on graded competition next out and ran a good third in the Golden
Rod S. (G2) despite a bad start. She returned most recently over the track and
took an optional-claiming test while going Saturday’s 8 1/2-furlong distance by
an easy 9 3/4 lengths. We can’t pick against the talented three-year-old in this
spot. Donnie Meche has the return call.
CEE’S IRISH (Cee’s Tizzy) has finished off the board only once from six
career starts so far and already owns two stakes victories, including the Corte
Madera S. from her final start as a juvenile last year. The Doug O’Neill-trained
gray returned in mid-January at Santa Anita to earn her other black-type score,
this time in the Blue Norther S. on the turf. Though she might not be able to
keep up with our top pick, Cee’s Tizzy looks better than many of the others in
this race based on seasoning and stakes experience. Tyler Baze will be aboard.
THE BETER MAN CAN (Lord Avie) earned a hard-fought neck victory in the
Tiffany Lass S. last out over the track. The dark bay miss will stretch out an
extra sixteenth here, but could have still challenge in the top three with a
clean start. She’s earned some nice numbers when compared with others in this
field and could come with a late rally under Elvis Perrodin.
ENDURING WILL (Arch) was second in the Tiffany Lass after a dominating
10-length score in the Silver Spur Breeders’ Cup S. The Albert Stall Jr. trainee
may have needed her last one off the more than three-month layoff and could
continue to improve for her connections. John Velasquez in the saddle doesn’t
hurt her chances either. EYES ON EDDY (Touch Gold) was only 1 3/4 lengths back
in fourth in the Tiffany Lass after racing near the rear for much of that mile
event. The bay lass broke her maiden right before that and could move forward
here with a top-three placing. PRIVATE GIFT (Unbridled) just broke her maiden
last out in her fourth try and worked a nice five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 last
Friday to get ready for this one. She could earn a check with
another late rally.
STEAL THE SHOW (Cat Thief) has finished third in her past two, but that was
by wide margins. She may not be able to challenge here. ELSIE LUCILLE (Lord
Avie) has finished well back of others in this field in the past and probably
won’t be able to keep up this time either. GLORIOUS PROSPECT (Lycius) is
undefeated from two career starts so far, but the bay miss doesn’t look fast
enough to threaten against these. We can’t recommend.
