Californian stallion Smokester, sire of multiple Grade 1 winner Free House,
died Monday at Cardiff Stud Farms near Atascadero,
California. The 17-year-old stallion, by Never Tabled and out of the
winning Transworld mare Small World, was bred and raced by a partnership that included John Toffan,
Trudy McCaffery and trainer Paco Gonzalez. The dark bay won two of four career
starts and earned $35,600.
Smokester sired 1997 and 1998 California Horse of the Year Free House, an
earner of more than $3.1 million. In addition, he has sired nine stakes winners,
including Grade 2 winner Ninebanks and Grade 3 winner Areyoutalkintome. To date,
Smokester has sired 169 winners from 10 crops of racing age who have earned more
than $13.5 million.
