Horse of the Year CRIMINAL TYPE (Alydar) died on March 9 in Japan.
He was 20. Bred and owned by Calumet Farm, the chestnut reeled off four straight
wins in 1990, capturing the Pimlico Special (G1), Metropolitan H. (G1), Hollywood Gold
Cup (G1) and Whitney H. (G1), en route to Horse of the Year honors. Criminal
Type retired with a record of 24-10-5-3 and $2,351,817 in earnings.

His Met Mile victory was something special. Champion sprinter Housebuster ran a terrific race before falling a neck short, and Easy Goer was
no match in third. Criminal Type followed with another tremendous performance,
defeating Sunday Silence by a head in the 1 1/4-mile Hollywood Gold Cup. The D.
Wayne Lukas trainee won six graded stakes during his championship season.

Out of the Grade 2-winning Klepto (No Robbery), Criminal Type is a
half-brother 1986 champion turf mare Estrapade (*Vaguely Noble) and Group 1
winner Isopach (Reviewer).

Criminal Type retired to Calumet but didn’t reach the same heights at stud as
he did on the track. Transferred to Japan in the mid-90s, his notable offspring
include 1995 Dwyer S. (G2) winner Hoolie and Grade 3 heroine Madame Adolphe.
