Juddmonte Farms’ homebred INTERCONTINENTAL (GB) (Danehill) overcame her own
rankness to become the first repeat winner of the $200,000
Jenny Wiley S. (G3)
at Keeneland on Sunday. The bay mare broke well to sit in fourth early beneath
Jerry Bailey but was quite headstrong, pulling her jockey to the front prior to
the half-mile in :49. Once the lass settled down, they were all running for
second as she opened up and cruised to the wire, stopping the timer for 1 1/16
firm turf miles in 1:41 4/5. Trained by Bobby Frankel, the winner gave back
$3.40, $2.80 and $2.20 while topping the $30.20 exacta and $136.80 trifecta at
3-5.
“Usually, after she throws her head back in my face the second time,” Bailey
said of the rank mare, “she settles down but she would have none of it today.”
Delta Princess (A.P. Indy) closed stoutly on the outside to gain a very good
second one non-threatening length back, returning $6 and $3.80 at 13-1. Sister Swank
(Skip Away) garnered show honors at 11-1, paying $3.80 for the show. River Belle
(GB) (Lahib) was fourth on the inside, rounding out the $635 superfecta at 5-1.
Katdogwan (GB) (Bahhare) was next and trailed by Sister Star (Langfuhr) and High
Court (Brz) (Blush Rambler). My Dear Lady (Arg) (Mutakddim) and Jacqui’s Promise
(Loup Savage) were withdrawn.
Intercontinental moved her mark to 16-9-2-3 following the win, and bumped her
earnings to $905,263. She was last seen winning the Matriarch S. (G1), and also
owns a win in the Just A Game Breeders’ Cup H. (G2), while placing in a pair of
Group 1 events.
The winner was bred in Great Britain and produced from the highly-productive
stakes-winning Hasili (Kahyasi), who has also produced, in succession, multiple
Group 3 winner and co-highweight Dansili (GB) (Danehill), champion turf mare and Breeders’ Cup
Filly & Mare Turf S. (G1) heroine Banks Hill (Danehill), dual Grade 1 heroine
Heat Haze (GB) (Green Desert) and Group 2 winner Cacique (Danehill), in addition
to Intercontinental.
