Sunday’s $200,000 Jenny Wiley S. (G3) features last year’s winner,
INTERCONTINENTAL (GB) (Danehill), among nine turf distaffers, and the defending
champion is the 8-5 favorite on the morning line for the 1 1/16-mile affair with Jerry Bailey
aboard. The Grade 1
winner looks very formidable, but we’ll try to beat her with RIVER BELLE (GB) (Lahib).
Trained by Todd Pletcher, River Belle captured a Group 3 event at Ascot in
2003 and won her U.S. bow over allowance rivals last August. The now
four-year-old filly made her third start stateside in the Queen Elizabeth II
Invitational Challenge Cup S. (G1) at Keeneland last October and threatened to
win it all at the top of the stretch before settling for third, beaten only a
length. River Belle then wrapped up her 2004 campaign with a victory in the Mrs.
Revere S. (G2) at Churchill Downs. She returned this year in March’s Honey Fox
H. (G3) at Gulfstream Park and chased a fast pace from the start before
weakening a little late. We’ll give her that race and look for a big jump
forward with a winning performance.
Intercontinental is a classy turf female under the care of Bobby
Frankel and the five-year-old mare runs well fresh. She returns off 140-day
freshening and can be placed anywhere in the early going with her tactical
speed. Intercontinental will likely be in the mix of things through the stretch
drive.
SISTER SWANK (Skip Away) is one-for-one at Keeneland, winning the Valley View
S. (G3) last October, and has either won or been close in her last seven starts.
The honest chestnut is two-for-three at the distance and rallied well last time
to be second in an about 7 1/2-furlong stakes at Fair Grounds. She should relish
the added ground here and can add value to the exotics.
SISTER STAR (Langfuhr) is going well presently for trainer Kenny McPeek and
could factor into the top three. She just missed last time in the Hillsborough
S. (G3) at Tampa Bay, finishing second by a neck, and should sit a good stalking
trip close to the pace under Brice Blanc.
HIGH COURT (Brz) (Blush Rambler) drew the far outside post, but she’s showing
signs of improvement for trainer Michael Matz and has the look of a live
longshot for her conditioner. DELTA PRINCESS (A.P. Indy) owns terrific
BRIS Late Pace ratings but hasn’t had much success against graded rivals. The
six-year-old mare remains a threat to come running late for a share.
KATDOGAWN (Bahhare) is a classy five-year-old mare and just missed last time
in the Santa Ana H. (G2). The California shipper may prefer a little more
ground, so we’ll just watch her in this competitive spot. MY DEAR LADY (Arg) (Mutakddim)
didn’t show much last time on the main track and could prove more effective on
the grass, but she hasn’t shown us enough to recommend her chances here.
JACQUI’S PROMISE (Loup Sauvage) steps up in class and ran poorly against
allowance rivals in her last start.
