Eleven sophomore fillies are set to line-up in Saturday’s $100,000
Providencia S. (G3) over Santa Anita’s turf, and THATSWHATIMEAN (Belong to Me)
appears capable of capitalizing on her last win in the China Doll S. over the
course. Trained by Warren Stute, the dark bay miss was making her first start on
the grass in that mile test and prevailed by a nose after tracking in third
most of the way. She earned a 94 BRIS Speed rating for her game effort as well as a
98 BRIS Late Pace figure and will have Jon Court, who scored his 3,000th career
win on Thursday, in the saddle.
CLEFT (A.P. Indy) doesn’t own quite as high numbers as our top pick, but she
has already shown more in two starts on the turf than in her previous dirt
races. The Richard Mandella trainee ran an even fifth in her grass debut two
back, then returned to break her maiden while running three wide in mid-March.
That particular race came at Saturday’s distance of nine furlongs, and the bay
lass posted a 96 Late Pace figure for the victory. Cleft will challenge from
just off the pace under Martin Pedroza.
ON LONDON TIME (Gilded Time) was only three parts of a length back in third
in the China Doll last out in her turf bow and also showed that the switch in
surface was needed. The chestnut had been facing some of the best of her age
group on the dirt (Sweet Catomine [Storm Cat], Sharp Lisa [Dixieland Band]) and
hasn’t fared to well. She earned her highest Speed rating (93) to date in the
China Doll and could break through with first stakes win on Saturday. Corey
Nakatani has the call.
ROYAL COPENHAGEN (Fr) (Inchinor [GB]) ran second in both the Miesque S. (G3)
and Blue Norther S. when she came over from France, and didn’t do so bad in the
La Habra S. most recently, finishing sixth by only 3 1/2 lengths. That came
after a slow start and four-wide trip, so a cleaner break and better position
could offer the Laura de Seroux charge the opportunity to earn her U.S. debut.
Rene Douglas returns to the irons.
BERBATIM (Bernstein) dead-heated for third in the La Habra after a slow break
and could show more here with the added ground. Also conditioned by Mandella,
the dark bay filly can finish in the top three and might challenge for it all. GUARANTEED VICTORY
(Smart Strike) returns to the turf after a distant placing in the Santa Anita
Oaks (G1) last out. Prior to that one, the Doug O’Neill trainee was second in an
optional claimer over the track, and she could hang around at the end to grab part.
SHINING ENERGY (Rahy) is the likely favorite in this event, but the Julio
Canani trainee has yet to win beyond 6 1/2 furlongs. She scored in the La Habra by
2 3/4 lengths after a bumpy trip and could come with another late run to win it
all, but we’ll let her beat us at probable short odds. THANKS (Royal Anthem) was
only a half-length back in her second career start, a grassy 1 1/8-mile maiden
last out, and deserves some consideration for the gimmicks at a price.
CRYSTAL HOUSE (Chester House) earned her only win in a sloppy off-the-turf
maiden and might not be up to facing these at this time. We’ll watch to see if
she can break through on the green. CHARMING COLLEEN (Charismatic) hasn’t been
able to compete against her division on the dirt and might show more on the
grass, but we’ll watch for now to see how she handles her first turf race.
SINGHALESE (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]) will be making her U.S. bow here so we’ll give
her a race.
