Shuvee

Only five distaffers went to the post for Saturday’s $196,000
Shuvee H. (G2)
at Belmont Park, and in the end it was Irving and Marge Cowan’s homebred SOCIETY
SELECTION (Coronado’s Quest) who crossed the wire first. Sent off the 9-5 second
choice, the four-year-old miss and jockey Eibar Coa ran last through the opening
half-mile before making their run, collaring the leaders with a furlong to go.
The duo then drew clear by 2 3/4 lengths at the wire to stop the clock in 1:34
1/5 for eight fast-track furlongs.

Traci Girl (Quiet American) went to the early lead, posting fair fractions of
:22 4/5 for the opening quarter and :45 4/5 for the half. Bohemian Lady (Carson
City), who pressed that rival throughout, took over after three quarters in
1:09 2/5 but lost that lead almost immediately to the eventual winner.
Daydreaming (A.P. Indy) rallied three wide on the turn but was no match for the
winner in deep stretch and had to settle for second, a neck clear of Bohemian
Lady. Traci Girl came next and was followed by Saintliness (Holy Bull), who
never threatened.

The Allen Jerkens trainee returned $5.80, $3 and $2.50 while keying exotics
of $11 (exacta) and $47 (trifecta). Daydreaming, the 8-5 favorite, gave back
$2.70 and $2.20 while Bohemian Lady was worth $2.80 for the show.

Out of Grade 3 winner Love that Jazz (Dixieland Band), Society Selection
has an unraced three-year-old half-sister named Indy Jazz (A.P. Indy). With this
win, the bay improves her mark to 14-6-3-1 with earnings of $1,376,700, having
scored in last year’s Alabama S. (G1), Test S. (G1) and Comely S. (G3) as well
as the 2003 Frizette S. (G1). Society Selection also finished on the board in
four black-type events, including the Beldame S. (G1) and Acorn S. (G1) last
season.
