Del Mar Debutante

Saturday’s Del Mar Debutante S. (G1) features 11 juvenile fillies going seven
furlongs and the impressive maiden winner WILD FIT (Wild Wonder) is our top
choice. The Jeff Mullins trainee settled nicely near the back of the field
before closing strongly to win going away by four lengths when unveiled
13 days ago. The gray filly figures to relish the
extra distance, and with all the speed present, it should set up her late kick.
Wild Fit could be something special.

Trying to figure out which of the other fillies will complete the exacta is
mind boggling, so we’re going with the Christopher Paasch-trained entry of
MYSTERY GIRL (Stormy Atlantic) and DIPLOMAT LADY (Forestry). Mystery Girl
finished an even third to a couple of others in here after being three wide on
the turn in the Landaluce S., and then pressed the early pace before drawing off by four lengths
against maiden special weight foes in her last outing. She showed a good closing
kick in her debut and may reel in some of the speedsters if rated early.

Despite
being bumped near the furlong marker, Diplomat Lady broke her maiden at first
asking and then set the pace while under pressure from between foes in the Sorrento S. (G3) last out.
She held on well for fourth in that one and only enhances the entry here.

BULLY BONES (Hesabull) looked good in the drive, winning the 6 1/2-furlong
Sorrento last out. She is tactically drawn near the outside and is undefeated in
two career starts, but won’t add any value to the gimmicks. The speedy RIVER’S
PRAYER (Devon Lane) suffered her first defeat when finishing a close second as
the odds-on favorite in the six-furlong Landaluce. Prior to that she captured
the 5 1/2-furlong Cinderella S. in front-running fashion. She could be salty if
sent from the bell from the extreme outside.

Multiple stakes-placed SLICK ROAD (Mud Route) closed well at large odds,
running a good third in the Sorrento. The Tim Yakteen trainee will
likely enjoy the extra yardage and rates our sleeper for a share. I CAN SEE
(Flying Chevron) is another closer who ran deceptively well in the Sorrento
after being far back in the early going. She could crash the exotics at a big
price.

CALAMITY JANE (Cape Canaveral) broke her maiden on the front end at Hollywood
Park, running five furlongs in :57 3/5. She gets a class test with these and may
get cooked in a speed duel. MISS NORMAN (Artax) dueled early and then edged away
late going 6 1/2 furlongs in her latest. She would have to improve to factor.

INDIAN BREEZE (Indian Charlie) won the Landaluce after pressing the
pacesetter and then stopped badly in the Sorrento, finishing a distant eighth.
She begins on the rail with first-time blinkers and Pat Valenzuela, but looks
like a dicey proposition off her latest. GOLDEN SILK (Songandaprayer) was a
decent maiden winner in her last start but this could be too much too soon.
