Five set for Best Pal

Last updated: 8/12/05 5:57 PM

WHAT A SONG (Songandaprayer) heads a field of five in Sunday’s $150,000 Best
Pal S. (G2) at Del Mar going 6 1/2 furlongs. The dark bay juvenile is undefeated
from two starts — a 3 1/4-length win in a June 18 maiden special weight and a
neck score in the July 16 Hollywood Juvenile Championship S. (G3).
He’ll have to tote the top weight of 123 pounds, most of which will be taken up
by Victor Espinoza, and will have to hold off BASHERT (Tiger Ridge) yet again.

The Bill Currin-trained Bashert took two tries to break his maiden, doing so
two back by five lengths, before running second in the Hollywood Juvenile
Championship. Rene Douglas, aboard for all three of Bashert’s starts, will be in
the saddle once again Sunday.

A. P. WARRIOR (A.P. Indy) will be making his stakes debut here in only his
second career start and drew the rail post under Garrett Gomez while carrying
119 pounds. To his outside will be PLUG ME IN (Hold for Gold), Kerwin John, 117;
What a Song; CORAZONDELCAMPEON (Comic Strip), Corey Nakatani, 119; and Bashert,
119.
