Kingfield Farms’ JAMBALAYA (Langfuhr) settled into a tracking position early
in Sunday’s $412,467
Breeders’ S. at Woodbine before taking over entering the
stretch and drawing off for an easy eight-length victory. Trained by Catherine
Day Phillips, the dark bay gelding stopped the clock in 2:27 4/5 for 1 1/2 miles
on the firm turf and earned his first stakes with this one, the third leg of the
Canadian Triple Crown.
Ridden by Jono Jones, Jambalaya was content to wait in fifth as See the Wind
(Sky Classic) set opening fractions of :23 3/5, :46 4/5 and 1:11 1/5. By the
time the field had entered the turn, though, the eventual winner had moved into
contention and was second through a mile in 1:36 4/5. Taking over soon after,
the sophomore easily extended his margin of victory with each stride.
Sent off the 6-5 favorite in the nine-horse field, Jambalaya paid out $4.70,
$2.90 and $2.50. Area Limits (Boundary) was easily second, 11 lengths clear of
See the Wind in third, and returned $5.20 and $3.90 at 5-1. Show gave back $6.20
at 20-1 and the exotics were worth $16.40 (exactor), $154.40 (triactor) and
$258.95 ($1 superfecta, 9-8-3-2). Welcome Again (Awesome Again) was another 5
1/2 lengths back in fourth and next came Utmost Respect (Numerous), Slew’s Saga
(Seattle Slew), Stephen’s Gift (Stephen Got Even), Molinaro Beau (Tempolake) and
Autumn Snow (Rahy).
Jambalaya improved his career mark to 6-3-0-1 and is out of the winning Vice
Regent mare Muskrat Suzie. He was bred in Ontario, Canada, by Gustav
Schieckedanz.
Neither winners from the first two legs of the Canadian Triple Crown, Wild
Desert (Wild Rush) in the Queen’s Plate S. and Ablo (Lite the Fuse) in the
Prince of Wales S., were entered in this one.
