The David la Croix-conditioned chestnut broke well and dueled for the early
lead while five wide on the backstretch as Diplomat Lady (Forestry) clocked the
first quarter in :21 3/5. Bully Bones remained in third through a half in :44
2/5 and was taken three deep into the turn under jockey Rene Douglas. She was
able to take over the lead entering the stretch, pulling away by two
lengths at the six-furlong point in 1:10 2/5 and holding off a hard-charging
Acceleration (Vision and Verse) to complete the 6 1/2-furlong affair in 1:17 1/5
over a fast track at Del Mar.
Listed as the 4-1 third choice, Bully Bones returned $10.20, $6 and $5 while
keying $1 exotics of $53 (exacta), $844.80 (trifecta) and $5,409.20 (8-5-1-4
superfecta). Acceleration hit the wire 1 1/2-lengths back to give $9 and $7 at
almost 12-1 while Slick Road (Mud Route) came home another three lengths back in
third, paying $12.40 for the show at 41-1. Diplomat Lady crossed under the line fourth and
was followed by I Can See (Flying Chevron), Hystericalady (Distorted Humor),
Tiger on the Loose (Tale of the Cat), 2-1 favorite Indian Breeze (Indian
Charlie) and Noriska Number One (Menhal).
Bully Bones was bred in Florida by Meadowbrook Farm Inc. and is out of
the stakes-winning mare Anniversary Wish (Beau’s Eagle). She is a half-sister to
stakes victress Wishes and Roses (Greinton), multiple stakes winner Wishingitwas
(Sandpit [Brz]), an unnamed yearling colt by Star of Valor and a 2005 colt by Lexicon. Bully
Bones broke her maiden last out at first asking by a half-length and increases her earnings to
$117,000 while keeping her record a perfect two-for-two.
