As usual, an outstanding field has been assembled for Friday’s Spinaway S.
(G2) at Saratoga. The seven-furlong test features three undefeated
two-year-old fillies as well as the first, second and fourth-place finishers
from the opening-day Adirondack S. (G2). EFFECTUAL (Carson City) and SENSATION
(Dixie Union) are both perfect in two career starts and rate our top choices.

Steve Asmussen, arguably the best two-year-old trainer in the nation, will
saddle Effectual, who exits an easy 2 1/2-length romp in the 5 1/2-furlong
Debutante S. (G3) at Churchill Downs. The dark bay filly broke slowly, quickly
scampered to the lead, set the pace while clear around the turn with the rider
sitting chilly, then drew off through the lane with little, if any,
encouragement. Since then, Effectual has been pointed specifically toward this race and we
expect a good showing.

Sensation exits an impressive 4 1/2-length victory going six furlongs over this
surface on August 5. The Stanley Hough trainee broke her maiden by a widening 11
lengths over a sealed muddy surface at Belmont Park in her debut, running 5 1/2
furlongs in a quick 1:04 2/5. She looms as the primary contender under a
returning Eibar Coa.

FIFTH AVENUE (Monarchos) closed strongly up the inside, checked slightly and
altered course to the outside in midstretch, then finished determinedly for
runner-up honors in the Adirondack. Prior to that, the Mark Hennig-trained bay
dueled for the early lead before capturing the five-furlong Fashion S. at
Belmont Park by a nostril. Given her gameness, she’s a good one to use in the
exotics.

The Todd Pletcher-trained ADIEU (El Corredor) finished an even fourth as the
favorite in the six-furlong Adirondack after winning the 5 1/2-furlong Astoria
S. at Belmont Park. She is tactically drawn on the outside for a clear
stalk-and-pounce trip and must be respected for part. FOLKLORE (Tiznow) finished
second to Fifth Avenue in her debut, and second to Adieu in the Astoria, before
proving best in the Adirondack last out. She is going to have to work out a trip
from the one-hole for trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

WONDER LADY ANNE L (Real Quiet) shipped in from Calder and finished a decent
third in the Astoria in her latest. She has class questions but is trained by
Dick Dutrow. ALONG THE SEA (Anees) broke her maiden at this distance in her
debut at Calder but is in deep water with these.
