Maryland Million postponed due to rain

Last updated: 10/8/05 1:33 PM

Storms on the East Coast have forced Laurel Park to postpone Saturday’s 20th
running of the Maryland Million. The Laurel, Maryland, track has been inundated
with heavy rains and flooding threatens the area. A total of 6 1/2 inches has
fallen as of 11 a.m. (EDT) Saturday.

The Maryland Jockey Club has moved the 12-race program to next Saturday. The
post position draw will be held Wednesday. The $150,000 Safely Kept H. (G3),
originally scheduled for next Saturday at Laurel, will now be run one day later.

“We are extremely disappointed with the action we had to take as a result of
the torrential rain we received,” Chief Operating Officer Lou Raffetto said. “After consulting with the Maryland Million officials we made a
collective decision to cancel. We would not have done them justice by conducting
racing on a day such as this.”
