A field of nine will go postward for Saturday’s $250,000 Phoenix Breeders’
Cup S. (G3) at Keeneland and FIFTEEN ROUNDS (Fit to Fight) should find a home over
Keeneland’s speed favoring track. The Christine Janks-conditioned five-year-old
has won his last two, including the Arlington Breeders’ Cup Sprint H. last out
in which he defeated fellow rivals ELUSIVE JAZZ (Elusive Quality) and LEVEL
PLAYINGFIELD (Level Sands). Fifteen Rounds has captured 11 of 16
starts at the six-furlong Phoenix distance and has earned triple-digit BRIS
Speed figures in five of his past six trips. Chris Emigh rides.
Level Playingfield comes off a narrow victory in the Marfa S. at Turfway
Park, making a late rally for the score. The Robert Holthus trainee has hit the
board seven times in nine tries at six furlongs. Regular jockey John McKee will
be making the start aboard the four-year-old gelding and should make a run for
the exotics.
BWANA CHARLIE (Indian Charlie) is making his first start since coming home
sixth after a blistering pace in the Aristides Breeders’ Cup H. (G3) in June.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, the four-year-old bay won his only start over the
Lexington, Kentucky, track, annexing the Lafayette S. (G3) in April of last year.
Bwana Charlie has been working well for Asmussen and is a solid contender. Shaun
Bridgmohan has the call.
PREMIUM SALTINE (Salt Lake) has won five of his last six since moving to the
shedrow of Tom Amoss, his only loss a very close second in the Iowa Sprint H.
His front-running style should benefit him here and the six-year-old dark bay
gelding could prove dangerous.
Elusive Jazz was a good fourth in the Marfa and ran a neck behind Fifteen
Rounds in the Arlington Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The Bobby Barnett-conditioned
chestnut has been victorious twice in four attempts at six furlongs and could
make a top three showing here. KORBYN GOLD (Gold Case) exits a close second in the Marfa,
outfinished in the end of that one. He remains a credible player Saturday and should
be kept in mind for the bottom of the exotics.
DANIELTOWN (Pioneering) is another front runner who warrants a look in
the superfecta. He comes off a disappointing third versus allowance company at
Mountaineer and trainer Bernie Flint hopes to improve off that effort. SGT. BERT
(Confide) has more experience on the turf but is making his first start on the
dirt since March. He might need another trip on the main track before contesting
at this level.
